Glasgow: An interesting case study of suburban rail at a time the spotlight is on Manchester and London, and debates of regional vs national priorities are had. Some facts about this magnificently grand city's rail network: - Glasgow possesses an impressive density of stations, with over 60 rather uniformly spread along the spaghetti of railway lines that crisscross the city; you're never far away from a station! - Train services are run by Scotrail and no longer by the local Strathclyde Passenger Transport body (who still run the subway and buses). Transport Scotland therefore optimises rail to balance local needs with national services. - The Glasgow Subway is the 2nd oldest in the world and is being modernised for driverless operation...and importantly has a fantastic moquette! - Excitingly, lurking in central Glasgow are a number of abandoned railway lines, infrastructure such as tunnels remaining in situ and therefore offer the potential for expansion of the network. - Notable is the absence of a rail connection to Glasgow airport, despite the airport terminal being less than a mile from the railway and despite previous endeavours to connect it to the network. - Long before London had Crossrail... Glasgow has had two cross-city tunnels connecting east and west. - There are no less than four direct railway lines connecting Glasgow to Edinburgh. - The record fastest journey time by train between London and Glasgow is 3h:52mins... set in 1984.

Canada has talked about high-speed rail for decades—but has yet to build it. The proposed Alto network would connect Toronto and Quebec City with electric trains reaching 300 km/h and reduce Toronto–Montreal travel to roughly three hours. Planning, consultations and environmental work are underway, with the first construction segment expected between Ottawa and Montreal around 2029 or 2030. But uncertain costs and changing political priorities continue to raise questions about whether the project will finally move beyond the planning stage. What a fantastic day yesterday at the TransCityRail Midlands Conference. It was a pleasure connecting with so many industry leaders, asset owners, contractors and professionals from across the rail sector, while introducing Bromoco International and the innovative restoration and protective coating solutions we offer. The response to our products was incredibly encouraging, with several meetings secured and follow-up discussions already arranged. It's clear there is a growing appetite for solutions that help extend asset life, reduce whole-life costs and support more sustainable maintenance practices. High-Speed Train Agreement Between Alto and Trca: A Historic Milestone Explore the historic high-speed train agreement between Alto and Trca, marking a significant milestone in transportation and regional connectivity....

If Canada must choose one project, Alto high-speed rail is likely the better long-term social, economic, and environmental investment than expanding Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport. Alto would connect major cities quickly, reduce highway congestion, shift many short-haul air and car trips to electric rail, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve transportation safety, and increase productivity through faster travel. Government and independent analyses project substantially larger long-term GDP gains and broader regional economic benefits than conventional transportation expansion. Expanding Billy Bishop Airport would improve air capacity and business travel, but it would primarily benefit one metropolitan area while increasing aircraft movements and associated emissions and noise. Although aviation remains essential for longer-distance travel, rail is generally the more sustainable option for busy short-haul corridors.
