Did you know? 🤔 Across the 23 counties of the U.S.–Mexico border, more than 56% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and nearly 40% speak Spanish at home. Yet, 10 border counties have zero Spanish-language news sources, and philanthropic investment in the region sits at a median of just $0.14 per capita. Moving our sector from isolated survival to collective power starts with closing these visibility gaps. We cannot resource, connect, or advocate for borderland journalists if we don’t first map where they are and what their communities need. That’s why the Center for Community Media (CCM) is proud to partner with SembraMedia on a major project to build a comprehensive map, directory, and knowledge bank of news outlets, independent reporters, and community creators serving both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border. CCM will lead research efforts on the U.S. side of the border, while SembraMedia leads research on the Mexican side. I am so thrilled to be co-leading this effort with the brilliant folks at SembraMedia !! We are piloting new strategies for discovering, categorizing, and verifying community-based media, and producing what will be the first map of the local, hyperlocal, and cross border news and information ecosystem along the US-Mexico border. The map will be an expansive and inclusive look at how longstanding, migrant, Indigenous, and queer people connect, learn, reclaim, and narrate their stories. Drawing from this project, we hope to lay the foundation not only for a new understanding of journalism today, but also for theorizing the border and elevating civic and democratic practice beyond the electoral system. Why International Journalism Matters More Than Ever I was saddened to learn of the BBC's decision to reduce some of its South American journalistic coverage. I understand that these changes are driven by financial pressures and the difficult choices facing public service broadcasters. Nevertheless, the consequences deserve careful consideration. For many people, this may seem like a distant issue. It is not. In boroughs such as Southwark, home to one of the UK's largest Latin American communities, reliable reporting from Latin America helps people stay connected with their families, cultures and the realities shaping their countries of origin. Only recently, the BBC carried important reporting on Ecuador, reminding us how valuable trusted international journalism can be. These stories help us understand the political, social, economic and humanitarian challenges facing an entire continent and remind us that what happens in one part of the world often has consequences far beyond its borders. At a time when misinformation spreads rapidly online, reducing the presence of experienced international correspondents is a matter of concern. Independent journalism does more than report events abroad—it strengthens understanding, accountability and informed democratic debate at home. As someone born in Latin America and having lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years, I have seen how journalism can build bridges between cultures and communities. It helps us understand one another, fosters empathy, and reminds us that our shared humanity transcends borders. I sincerely hope that, despite today's financial challenges, the value of global journalism will continue to be recognised and protected for future generations. Every region deserves to be seen.
