What is the BIM Workflow? One of the biggest misconceptions about BIM is that it's only about creating a 3D model. In reality, BIM is a complete workflow that connects every stage of a project's lifecycle—from the initial concept to facility management. Here's how a typical BIM workflow looks: 1. Planning Project goals, BIM standards, client requirements, and the BIM Execution Plan (BEP) are defined. 2. Design Architects, Structural Engineers, and MEP Engineers create intelligent BIM models for their respective disciplines. 3. Coordination All discipline models are combined and reviewed to identify clashes, resolve conflicts, and improve collaboration before construction begins. 4. Documentation Plans, Sections, Elevations, Schedules, and Quantity Take-offs are generated directly from the BIM model, ensuring consistency across all drawings. 5. Construction The coordinated BIM model supports construction sequencing (4D), cost estimation (5D), progress tracking, and on-site execution. 6. Facility Management After project completion, the As-Built BIM model is handed over to the owner for maintenance, asset management, renovations, and future building operations. BIM won't solve your problems by itself. We build BIM automation tools for a living, so trust us on this: the software already does everything the brochures promise. The technology stopped being the bottleneck years ago. And yet projects with spectacular 3D models still burn — collisions found on site, redesigns paid for twice. We've seen it again and again, especially on large public projects. The difference isn't the software. 📐 "Give me the model at the highest LOD, so it's complete." Sounds sensible - it's one of the most expensive misunderstandings in BIM. A higher LOD doesn't mean "better". It means "more expensive and heavier". The skill is specifying exactly the level that meets the purpose of the stage: - LOD 100 - concept, massing, indicative area - LOD 200 - approximate geometry (early coordination) - LOD 300 - accurate construction design (documentation standard) - LOD 350 - connections and interfaces between disciplines (where clash detection works) - LOD 400 - shop level, prefabrication - LOD 500 - as-built model, digital twin The most common mistake? A uniform, high LOD for the whole model. On a real project the structure might be LOD 350 while furniture is LOD 200 - at the same time. Forcing LOD 400 everywhere is weeks of needless work and a model that hurts performance instead of adding value. And one distinction that costs money: LOD (geometry) ≠ LOI (information). An element can have beautiful geometry and zero data. ISO 19650 combines both into LOIN - "how much information is genuinely needed to make a decision". The right LOD is the lowest level that meets the purpose. No higher.
