Could today's energy crisis actually accelerate the renewable energy transition? History gives us an interesting reason to ask this question. The 1970s oil crisis exposed the vulnerability of economies heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels. It also stimulated greater investment, research and policy attention toward alternative energy sources, including solar energy—contributing to technological developments that became important in the decades that followed. Today, we are again experiencing serious energy-security challenges associated with geopolitical conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. But this time, I see two possible—and competing—paths. On one side, high and volatile fossil-energy prices, concerns about energy security, and dependence on imported fuels could accelerate investment in: Renewable energy • Energy storage • Green hydrogen • Electrification • Domestic energy production On the other side, higher energy costs can weaken economies, increase industrial costs and put pressure on government budgets. Under such conditions, governments and companies may prioritize energy affordability, security, defense and short-term economic stability, potentially slowing some renewable-energy investments. So I would genuinely like to open this question to the energy community: Will today's energy crisis ultimately accelerate the renewable-energy transition in the medium and long term—or could the economic consequences create a temporary setback for renewable energy? And perhaps even more importantly: Are you already seeing signals in your country, industry or organization that support either direction? I would be very interested to hear perspectives from different regions—Europe, Japan, MENA, the Americas, Asia and Australia. The Commissioner has welcomed the launch of the Waikato Regional Council Energy Strategy, highlighting its role in shaping New Zealand's transition to a low-emissions energy system. Speaking in Hamilton today he said that New Zealand's changing energy landscape requires long-term thinking and better coordination across government, industry and communities. "The value of a strategy is not that it predicts the future; its value is that it helps us prepare for a range of plausible futures and make better decisions regardless of what eventuates." With growing electricity demand, declining domestic gas reserves and increasing global uncertainty, having a clear long-term direction for the energy sector is more important than ever. ⚡ #Energystorage is no longer optional for Europe's #energytransition, it is strategic infrastructure. The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has adopted a new opinion recognising energy storage as "systemically important infrastructure for a sovereign, affordable and resilient European #EnergyUnion." The opinion highlights that alongside stronger #electricitygrids and interconnections, Europe needs a comprehensive approach to energy storage to strengthen #energysecurity, integrate #renewableenergy, reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and deliver an affordable, socially fair #energytransition. It also calls on the European Commission to develop a dedicated EU strategy for energy storage. Energy Storage Europe was pleased to contribute to the preparation of this opinion by sharing the sector's perspectives with the Committee members responsible for its development. The narrative that clean energy relies purely on political goodwill is officially dead. Capital flows where the business case is strongest, and right now, the economics of renewables are simply unbeatable. Despite federal policy headwinds, the US clean energy sector is set to add a record 45 GW of capacity this year—a 25% jump over previous records, according to data from S&P Global Energy. Here is why market forces are overriding policy resistance: Unmatched Speed to Market: Solar and wind projects boast development lead times under two years, compared to three-plus years for natural gas. - --When AI data centers and tech giants need massive power immediately, renewables are the only assets that can scale fast enough. Lowest CAPEX & Operating Costs: Lazard estimates break-even costs for solar ($38/MWh) and wind ($37/MWh) remain significantly lower than natural gas ($48+/MWh). Surging Power Demand: US electricity consumption is projected to rise 39% by 2035, driven by data centers, electrification, and manufacturing. The grid simply cannot afford to leave cheap capacity on the table. Pragmatic Economics: State-level momentum, consumer demand for residential solar and storage, and court decisions protecting clean energy infrastructure are ensuring projects move forward regardless of political rhetoric. You can cut subsidies and tighten approvals, but you cannot kill superior unit economics. Developers aren't building renewables to make a political statement—they are building them because it's the fastest, cheapest way to sell power in a resource-constrained world. Here are some more other questions: Why are electricity prices to consumers and business increasing when renewables are claimed to be lowest cost? Why are our large industrial businesses threatening to close because electricity prices are making it uneconomic to continue (with massive subsidies)? If we attained Net Zero (which technically we already have in Australia) - what actual difference will it make to global climate? Actual numbers please. If Net Zero is really a goal, why do not have nuclear power which is by far the lowest CO2 emission technology? How much has been spent so far in swimming towards net zero? How much will need to be spent to get there? Include all the subsidies and gifts in that cost. Just how many more turbines, panels, transmission wires and towers, batteries will we need to get back to the level of reliable power we used to have? Will we have blackouts when the wind stops, it gets cloudy and few hours or so of battery supply has run out?
