U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) just opened a new SBIR/STTR door, and it's built entirely around AI. The Genesis Mission Phase I opportunity is DOE's first SBIR/STTR funding opportunity managed under its new Office of Technology Commercialization structure. It's narrow, it's AI-specific, and it's fast moving. Four topics are open: → AI for biotech (biomolecular design, microbiome engineering, biomanufacturing) → AI for quantum computing and networking (error correction, qubit control, resource estimation) → AI for materials design (inverse design of new materials) → AI-driven autonomous laboratories (robotics, remote handling, neuromorphic computing) DOE plans roughly 40 awards from a $10M Phase I pool, with up to $44M in potential funding across a project's full lifecycle. The catch: this isn't a straight-to-full-proposal process. Every applicant must first submit a short Pitch (four questions, strict word counts) through DOE's Acquisition Management Portal. Only companies invited after Pitch review get to submit a full application. Pitch applications are due September 10, 2026 at 2:00 PM ET. If your company is building AI-native tools in biotech, quantum, materials, or lab automation, this is worth a serious look, especially with a compressed timeline and a screening step most founders haven't dealt with before. Not every research project brings together so many of the themes shaping today's innovation landscape: AI, advanced manufacturing, energy resilience and university-industry collaboration. That's one reason I'm excited to see a University of Delaware team selected for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission. Led by Suresh Advani and Navid Niknafs at the UD Center For Composite Materials, and in partnership with GE Vernova, the project aims to develop an AI-driven framework for manufacturing advanced composites, with potential applications across energy, infrastructure and other critical sectors. While working on this story, I learned just how challenging it can be to detect defects during composite manufacturing. The team is using AI, sensors and simulation technologies to identify and address problems before they become permanent — an approach that could improve both efficiency and reliability. Congratulations to the team! I’m looking forward to following the impact of this work and seeing where it leads. Vancouver-based Intellistake has signed a definitive $17-million agreement to acquire Texas-based Nanoai in a share-based transaction tied to performance milestones. NanoAi has developed a portable, nanotechnology-powered platform designed to identify multiple airborne threats from a distance. Backed by more than 60,000 validation tests, the technology combines advanced sensing with machine learning, geolocation, and real-time data processing.
