Geothermal Energy Gaining Ground in New England

A bright spot for the energy transition amidst otherwise overcast skies: we’re drilling more geothermal than we ever have in New England. Why? Low cost. Highly reliable. Cheap to operate. And subsidized by the federal government. Remind you of anything? This test bore we drilled up in Maine last week is a perfect example. With 4,000 boreholes and counting, we’re putting geothermal into public schools, private schools, convention centers, airports—even facilities for defense contractors. It’s a highly pragmatic choice that’s gaining broader adoption every day. I’m assuming these are ground‑loop geothermal heat pumps for heating and cooling. Those systems depend entirely on the thermal conductivity of the subsurface. If the geology isn’t right, the system isn’t efficient, and the “cheap clean energy” narrative falls apart fast. That first bullet point exists because of the last one. The “low cost” claim only holds when federal subsidies are doing the heavy lifting. Take those away and the economics look very different. And don’t forget the physics. Ground‑source heat pumps only work well when you have enough groundwater contact or saturated soil to act as a stable heat exchanger. If you don’t, you end up with a choked system that costs more to install, more to operate, and performs no better — often worse — than a high‑efficiency air‑source system

Andrew Koffke, P.E. Colin Schless LEED, CPHC the total performance of these systems is really hard to beat! For customers who can take the long view, even without incentives these systems can make financial sense.

4,000 boreholes and counting is a wild number, Colin Schless LEED, CPHC. Great to see geothermal winning on the boring stuff (cost and reliability) rather than just the vibes! Also: 4,000 rows on a borehole register, a pile of permits to dig, and a stack of 811 tickets you have to keep alive across the whole programme. Shout if you ever want a platform to keep track of that lot 😉

Love to see it, and that Heat + Cool aspect, thats starting to really become evident in UK conversations during our red hot summer 🥵 We aren’t used to this, or ready for it! It should be raining here 🤣
