‘6 months from now we’re going to look back at the hugging face hack and think it was so basic’ David’s take from our bh Decibel Partners panel on the changing landscape of ai/llm security has been haunting me since. It reminds me of the ‘this is the worst version of ai we will ever have’ comment that I think about regularly too. The cyber arms race has always been a thing. But, in the advent of ai, it’s been put on hyper speed. Most years my take away from blackhat is ‘same story, different year’. But not this time. For all the hype we’ve seen and heard about ai over the years, it feels like we’re finally seeing the fruits of it on both offense and defense and speed seems to be the biggest theme around the capabilities we’re seeing it enable. Everything is moving faster: Attackers, defenders, humans, machines, etc And ai isn’t replacing jobs but it’s changing them. More supervision. More complexity. More coordination. This next year is going to be wild. Edward, david and i got to speak with nfl legend Richard Sherman after our talk and heard from him about how the best defenders in the world make it happen on the field during the game and shared with him how the cyber community does it off the field 24/7. I think our job’s harder :) Great event. Thanks again to Tanya, Stacey, Jon, Dan, Richard and the whole Decibel Partners team.
Well said Andrew Peterson - I don’t want to be antagonistic but I do have to say one thing - it feels like to me that here at black hat it’s only the folks in the “startup hall” that understand where this tech is going and what security needs to look like in the near future - too much AI washing going on in the incumbents… claiming lots but doing little…
I’m a Seattle guy and this Defense was great. Part of the reason for that was staying connected and everyone doing their job. It’s a team sport!

Really cool event !
The Richard Sherman parallel breaks down here. He gets film review, timeouts, a defined field. Content defenders react to attacks with no play clock and rules that shift mid, game.
