The European Commission recently approved nearly €300 million in state assistance under the European Chips Act for two key semiconductor projects in Germany. The funding directly supports ZEISS Group in Baden-Württemberg and French deep-tech innovator Zadient Technologies in Saxony-Anhalt. This funding is a major step toward de-risking Europe’s tech supply chain by securing essential chipmaking technology directly within Europe. By keeping these critical steps local, companies operating in Europe can enjoy greater stability, predictable lead times and reduced exposure to global shipping bottlenecks. Europe's problem is not only the lack of chip manufacturing plants. We also face a significant shortage of know-how in advanced semiconductor design and production. Investments like this are important because they help build capabilities and expertise. That said, €300 million is modest by industry standards, considering that a state-of-the-art semiconductor fab costs roughly 30-50 times more.
The ASML-story has been an astonishing achievement by working on the borders of what is possible on the laws of nature. But the next chip-building machines and chip architecture will be different. Other technologies then high energy lasers guided with Zeiss mirrors and linses are being developed. I hope that this 300 M taxpayer's money goes to the new strategies to maken chips even more performant...
Just 300 million euros, really? Compared with the total #investment of €30B for the planned construction of the #Intel chip factories in #Magdeburg – 10 billion euros of which in the form of federal grants – that iswort hardly h mentioning.
Very positive for Europe. Semiconductor production is becoming increasingly strategic, and bringing key technologies closer to home will strengthen Europe’s industrial base and supply chain resilience.
Can Governmental subsidies replace a business friendly environment? I have my doubts.
great. Alphabet alone does 300mn of CapeX every 13 hours btw
Great!!! Please make the best out of it!
What we should have learned by now, looking at the state of some industries from drug manufacturing to electrical vehicles is that it is not enough to be the technology leader or having the leanest production - no, you have to own the entire supply chain from raw material, components, production equipment, manufacturing all the way to the finished product and it's distribution. Only then you can rightfully claim having a true strategic advantage and having achieved technological sovereignty. So this EU initiative is just a first, tentative, very small step in this direction. It remains to be seen if it shall gain momentum over time and what comes finally out of it.
