💧 Managing water resources well is becoming one of the defining challenges for municipalities around the world. Addressing this challenge requires more than short-term solutions. It demands long-term vision, sustained investment, and the confidence to plan decades ahead. That's exactly what just happened in Cascais, Portugal. The Municipal Assembly has approved the extension of the Águas de Cascais concession through 2042, a company equally owned by the Aquapor Serviços, S.A. and AGS Water Solutions Since 2001, Águas de Cascais has managed water distribution and wastewater drainage for 220,000 inhabitants, across a network of roughly 1,429 km of pipelines, 26 reservoirs and 24 pumping stations. This extension provides the long-term visibility needed to continue investing in efficiency, innovation and resilience, ensuring that Cascais is better prepared for the water challenges ahead. 🌍 ACCIONA has completed the refurbishment and extension of the Tróia wastewater treatment plant in Grândola, Portugal, for TROIARESORT, covering civil works, technology and return to service, with ACCIONA also managing operations for the first six months. The upgraded plant will serve a population equivalent of 16,500, with an average flow of 4,356 m³/day, significantly boosting treatment capacity on the Tróia peninsula. Veolia-operated South African waste site powered by new Rhino solar plant In a region where environmental responsibility is not just a value but a necessity, South African solar EPC+M company Rhino Energy Solutions, has commissioned a 648KWp solar plant at Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM), operated by Veolia. Situated in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal, the plant brings clean, reliable energy to one of South Africa's leading hazardous waste management operations. Formally opened by the deputy minister of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & Environment and the Mayor of Kwadukuza, the installation, developed alongside DCLM's advanced Liquid Treatment Plant, represents more than an infrastructure upgrade. Most utilities treat wastewater effluent as something to dispose of safely. De Watergroep and its sister company Farys are treating it as a water source. Hans Goossens, Chief Executive at De Watergroep, joined the Exec Exchange to talk about the direct potable reuse plant at Hofstade, live since mid-2025 and already doubling capacity from 1,000 to 2,000 cubic meters per day. Effluent from a wastewater plant in Aalst goes through nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, activated carbon, and chlorination, then either flows into supply or gets stored underground via aquifer recharge until summer demand picks up. On cost, Goossens was candid: Hofstade sits only slightly above the 80 to 90 cents per cubic meter typical of advanced surface water treatment, and well below desalination once you factor in energy use. The bigger challenge wasn't chemistry. It was public trust. De Watergroep leaned on continuous online monitoring, including flow cytometry technology from Swiss firm bNovate, to give both regulators and the public real-time reassurance on water quality rather than waiting 48 hours for lab results.
