Australia is falling behind. For a nation that is great at putting pen to paper, we struggle to think practically about how we will deliver on our promises. Our report reveals the staggeringly small number of critical mineral projects in our country near the finish line: of 907 projects nationwide, there are just 13 within two to four years of a final investment decision. While these minerals often go unnoticed relative to base or precious metals, they are essential to our daily lives. Think circuitry in our phones and computers, rare earth magnets in nearly every kitchen appliance, and of course (no LinkedIn post would be complete without a mention) the semiconductors crucial to AI. There is a real opportunity on the global stage for Australia to become the leading producer and processor of these essential minerals that are the backbone of modern innovation. However, we will be quickly forgotten if we continue with the status quo: digging up our valuable earth and shipping it overseas, where it is processed into something of practical worth. It is time to get serious. $28 billion has been committed since 2022, but announcements cannot masquerade as progress. My cynicism aside, with appropriate investment and planning that seeks to address the underlying structural issues, there is hope. Please find our thoughts on what can be done in the report linked below: https://lnkd.in/e9VwbdsJ It was a pleasure to work closely with Lachy Haynes and Simon McKenna on this report and the underlying data analysis. I look forward to contributing to further research and a subsequent study on progress in the sector later in the year.
Can we get serious about critical minerals now? Australia has over 900 critical minerals projects in its pipeline, yet only 13 are close to a Final Investment Decision. At a time when allies are prioritising security of supply and competing nations are moving quickly to industrialise their value chains, Australia needs to accelerate the development of its critical minerals sector. Our latest Aussie Mine Series 2026 article reveals the current state of the critical minerals pipeline, and ideas on what needs to change.
