Are we preparing students for university—or simply preparing them to pass school? A recent article highlights a growing concern from universities: increasing numbers of students are arriving on campus without the literacy, numeracy, and independent thinking skills expected of them. Lecturers report having to reteach concepts that should have been mastered years earlier, while students struggle with sustained reading, critical analysis, and complex problem-solving. Whether this trend is universal or not, it raises an important question for all of us in K–12 education. Success cannot be measured solely by examination results. The real test of schooling is whether young people leave us equipped to learn independently, think critically, analyse evidence, communicate effectively, and navigate an increasingly complex world. As educators, we need to look beyond curriculum coverage and ask: - Are our classrooms developing intellectual stamina or encouraging shortcuts? - Are students reading deeply or merely skimming for answers? - Are we nurturing curiosity, resilience, and judgement, or simply preparing students for the next assessment? In the age of AI, these questions become even more significant. When information is available instantly, the competitive advantage will not lie in recalling facts, but in asking better questions, evaluating evidence, thinking critically, and making sound decisions. The future won't be shaped by students who memorize the most. It will be shaped by those who think the best. For generations, success in school has often been measured by one question: "How much can you remember?" But the world has changed. Today, information is everywhere. A search engine can find it. AI can generate it. Technology can store it. So the real question is no longer: "What do you know?" It's: "What can you do with what you know?" The future belongs to people who can... • Think critically instead of accepting information blindly. • Solve problems they've never seen before. • Ask better questions. • Connect ideas across different disciplines. • Adapt when the world changes. • Continue learning long after school ends. These are not skills built through memorization alone. They are developed through meaningful learning experiences. Educational psychology consistently shows that deep learning happens when students actively engage with ideas—not when they simply repeat them. Memorization has its place. It's the foundation. But it should never be the destination. Knowledge gives us information. Thinking turns information into understanding. Understanding turns ideas into innovation. In a world where AI can answer almost anything, what kind of school will teach children to ask the questions that truly matter? This question has been on my mind lately. As someone who works closely with schools, educators, and parents, I've noticed a shift. Parents are no longer asking only about board results or university placements. They're asking bigger questions. "Will my child be able to adapt?" "Will they know how to think for themselves?" "Will they still be relevant in a world where AI is changing everything?" The truth is, AI can already provide answers in seconds. But it can't replace curiosity. It can't replace empathy. It can't replace judgement. And it certainly can't replace the courage to ask difficult questions. Perhaps that's where the role of schools is evolving. The most impactful schools won't simply prepare children to excel in examinations. They'll create environments where children learn to question, explore, collaborate, reflect, and make sense of an increasingly complex world. And the role of educators becomes even more meaningful. They are no longer just teaching content—they are nurturing thinkers, problem-solvers, innovators, and compassionate human beings. For me, this is what future-ready education really looks like. Most teachers standing in today’s classrooms are at least one generation older than the children they teach. That is not a problem. In fact, it is one of the greatest strengths of education. Experience matters. Wisdom matters. Human relationships matter. But every generation grows up in a different world. The child sitting in today’s classroom is growing up with AI, unlimited information, changing careers, and a pace of technological change that no previous generation has experienced. How can we prepare them for a world that even adults are still trying to understand? Perhaps this is why continuous learning for teachers has become one of the most important responsibilities of educational leadership. Not because teachers know less. But because the world keeps asking new questions. Every year, research reveals more about how children learn. Psychology helps us understand motivation differently. Neuroscience changes how we think about memory and attention. AI changes how knowledge is accessed. If education changes, shouldn’t those leading learning change with it? The future of education will not be determined by how much technology a school purchases. It will be determined by how much it invests in the people who stand in front of children every day. Because when teachers continue learning, students don’t just receive updated knowledge. They experience an education that grows with the world instead of falling behind it. The Purpose of Education: Are We Asking the Right Question? Throughout my career as a journalist, I have learned that asking the right questions is often more important than having immediate answers. The quality of our questions determines the quality of our decisions. The same principle applies to education. When discussing education reform, we often ask: How can we improve curricula? How can we integrate AI? How can we rank universities higher? These are important questions. But perhaps we are overlooking the most fundamental one: What is the purpose of education? Is it to graduate students with degrees? To produce informed citizens? To nurture critical thinkers? Or to develop human capital capable of meeting society's needs, driving innovation, strengthening the economy, and contributing to global progress? These are not competing goals—they are complementary. Yet they all stem from a single overarching purpose: Education should empower people to create value for their communities and for the world. If this purpose is clear, everything else becomes more coherent—curricula, teaching methods, assessment systems, research priorities, and investment decisions. Education strategies should not be built around dozens of disconnected priorities. They should focus on a small number of clear, measurable national objectives, supported by evidence, adaptable to changing realities, and sustained beyond changes in leadership. We may disagree on how to reform education. But we should never lose sight of why education exists in the first place.
