This week, I had to step away from an internship opportunity after realizing that the expectations and compensation simply didn’t align. As interns, we’re told to take ownership, be proactive, learn fast, and contribute meaningfully — and I completely agree with that. But expecting interns to work full-time hours, remain available beyond work hours, manage multiple responsibilities, and even be available on weekends, all for a stipend of ₹5,000/month, raises an important question: At what point does “learning experience” become exploitation? Interns are not afraid of hard work. Most of us are eager to learn, grow, and prove ourselves. But growth should come with mentorship, reasonable expectations, and respect for work-life balance. An internship should prepare students for the professional world — not normalize burnout at the very beginning of their careers.
