🤔 If your AI system complies with the EU AI Act, does that automatically make it ethical? At #GAISE26, Salla Westerstrand , technology ethicist (Gofore / GPT-Lab (Tampere University), explored exactly that question during her Academic Track presentation: "Engineering Trustworthy AI in Europe: Compliance & Responsibility." As AI regulation continues to evolve across Europe, many organizations are asking: "What do we need to do to comply?" But Salla challenged participants to think beyond compliance. During the session, she explored the EU AI Act, its risk-based approach, and the responsibilities it places on AI providers and deployers. One of the key messages was that regulation is only the starting point. Compliance helps us avoid certain harms. Governance helps us manage AI responsibly. But ethics helps us decide where we actually want to go. Participants reflected on questions that do not always appear in technical specifications: 🔹 Who benefits from an AI system and who might be left behind? 🔹 What values are we embedding into the systems we build? 🔹 How do AI systems affect people, organizations, society, and even the planet? 🔹 Are we building AI because we can, or because it creates meaningful value? One framework from the session captured this idea particularly well: AI Act = the minimum. Governance = the medium. Ethics = the direction. AI can help us think better. But it cannot think on our behalf. And, most importantly, it cannot take responsibility for the consequences. In this interview, Francesca Rossi, IBM Fellow and Global Leader for Responsible AI and AI Governance, highlights a principle that should guide every applied AI project: a machine can be a support, an accelerator, an operational collaborator. But #accountability must always remain human. This is a crucial point, especially now that generative and #agenticAI systems are becoming increasingly capable of producing content, code, analyses, operational decisions, and interactions that may appear “empathetic.” The risk is not only technical. It is cultural. If we start saying “the AI decided,” “the AI wrote it,” or “the AI made the mistake,” we are creating a grey area where responsibility disappears. And in industrial, healthcare, financial, or organizational contexts, this ambiguity is not acceptable. This is where #AIethics becomes essential: not as an abstract discussion, but as a practical framework for designing, deploying, and governing AI systems responsibly. #AI must not become an excuse. It should become a tool to improve the quality of human thinking, work, and decision-making. Just completed #ResponsibleAI Practices on DataCamp, and honestly, it was a good reminder of something I think about a lot. We talk so much about what AI can do — but not enough about how we use it. Bias, fairness, transparency… these aren’t just buzzwords. They’re the difference between AI that helps people and AI that harms them. Only 2 hours, but it gave me a lot to reflect on. If you’re working in tech or just curious about where AI is headed, I’d genuinely recommend it. These questions, though critical, are circling around the real issue we all sense but are struggling to articulate: how AI challenges human meaning and purpose.
