I recently attended a session, “Becoming a Public Scholar: Navigating the Media,” hosted by Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of Waterloo. The diverse panel offered practical guidance on how researchers can thoughtfully engage with the public through media. A few key reflections that stood out to me: -It’s okay to say “I don’t know.” Credibility matters more than having all the answers. Know the boundaries of your expertise. -Humanize your research. Communicating with empathy and keeping the human context in mind makes complex ideas more meaningful. -Media engagement is impactful. It plays a critical role in translating academic knowledge into societal value. -Public accountability matters. Much of our research is publicly funded—sharing its impact and relevance is not just beneficial, but essential. As a PhD student, this session reinforced the importance of stepping beyond academic circles and engaging with broader audiences in a responsible and authentic way. 📣 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 | 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 I’m pleased to share that we are now inviting contributions to the Society, Culture and Public Policy event, taking place on 𝟴–𝟵 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 at Liverpool John Moores University, organised in collaboration with Professor Rafaela Neiva Ganga and Steve Nolan. This two-day event brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore how cultural value is understood, evidenced, and applied in public policy contexts. We are inviting contributions across three strands: 🎙️ 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 5-minute contributions addressing pressing policy challenges, gaps in evidence, or new perspectives. 🎙️ 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀: 45-minute sessions exploring innovative approaches to researching and evidencing cultural value. 🎓 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: As coordinator of this strand, I would particularly encourage PhD researchers at any stage to submit their work. Grateful to be working with Ada Leung this semester and for her mentorship and support throughout the process. This year, I presented my research project, Own Your Loans: Student Loan Breakdown, at the 2026 Undergraduate Exhibition for Research, Inquiry, and Creative Activity, the 2nd Annual Berks Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium, and the Berks County Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference. It was an incredible experience to share research focused on improving financial literacy and helping students better understand student loans. We’re proud to share that the University has secured funding for five doctoral students through the highly competitive South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP), supported by the ESRC. Out of 310 initial applications across partner universities, only 39 funded places were awarded, and Chichester achieved the highest conversion rate across the partnership. This group of fantastic, student-centered instructors has accomplished so much at UIC the past few years, from creating hands-on experiential learning experiences for their students, rethinking language instruction, growing students' metacognitive thinking skills, diving into what it means to be a writer, and increasing their sense of belonging in their discipline.

Last week was all about the numbers. The investment, jobs, growth and the scale of ambition for the future expansion of Cambridge Science Park. But Trinity College Cambridge's masterplan is really about something much bigger: how do you create a place where the next generation of discoveries can happen? How do you design an environment which brings together scientists and innovators in ways which spark ideas no one can yet predict? In a new thought piece, we explore the challenge of planning the next 30 years of Cambridge Science Park. Creating a place which can adapt, evolve and inspire future generations. Our latest article looks at why great science parks are built not around today’s trends, but around people, collaboration and the power of place.
