Thrilled to share the publication of our new article in Heliyon: “Impact of a ‘circular’ use of sludge from the oil & gas industry: a model for biota radiation protection” 👉 Read here: https://lnkd.in/d8RqBEvn 🔬 This work — led by my former research group — presents an integrated approach to radiological risk assessment, ensuring protection not only for humans but also for the environment, in line with the principles of the Circular Economy. ♻️ The study focuses on the reuse of sludge from the oil & gas industry in agriculture, showing the importance of combining human- and biota-based criteria for truly sustainable and responsible practices. It’s always a pleasure to continue collaborating with my former research group and to see the hard work we shared in the past bearing fruit. 👏 A big congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the lead authors — Chiara Imparato, Mariagabriella Pugliese, Fabrizio Ambrosino, Marina Poje Sovilj and Giuseppe La Verde — whose dedication and expertise made this study possible.

However, traditional Water Quality Index (WQI) assessments often overlook 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆, potentially leading to misleading classifications and management strategies. 📚I’m glad to share my new article, “Silent contaminants in a vanishing wetland: microplastics and their ecological risks in the Gavkhoni Wetland sediments”, recently published in Environmental Geochemistry and Health (Springer).📋 This study examines microplastics in one of Iran’s most important wetlands, the Gavkhoni Wetland, which has recently dried up. I would like to sincerely thank my co-authors Mr. Ehsan Jafarpisheh, my advisors Prof. Gangadhar A., Dr. Afshin Ebrahimi, PhD and Prof. Karim Ebrahimpour for their valuable collaboration in this work. 🔍 Highlights of the study: • First comprehensive assessment of microplastic contamination in the Gavkhoni Wetland sediments. • The abundance of microplastics in this fragile ecosystem is significant and concerning. • Polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene were identified as dominant polymers. • Ecological risk indices revealed the site to be under considerable to dangerous risk levels. Aerobic bioremediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons at a former dry-cleaning site in York, PA. The results show effective reduction of the contaminants in soil using AgroRemed. VaporRemed reduced the vapor intrusion by treating hot spots. This is the first of its kind of study. The results indicate that our bioremediation products could be used for effective restoration of sites contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Colorado State University, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and University of Maine offer a significant change in how we think about the sequestration of carbon in soil. 🌱 Through a large-scale experiment across 118 soils from 15 U.S. agricultural sites, the researchers explored the key factors influencing mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) formation. 🌿 In contrast to some current theories, the article provides evidence that MAOC formation is facilitated by existing MAOC and saturation deficit rather than being directly influenced by microbial carbon-use efficiency (CUE). 🗺️ The research comprehensively details site selection, soil sampling, physicochemical analyses, dual-labeled DOC experiments, microbial CUE assessments, and advanced statistical modeling, offering a robust view of the mechanisms behind soil carbon stabilization. These findings underscore the importance of integrating soil physical and chemical properties, not just microbial processes, when designing strategies to enhance carbon storage in agricultural soils.
