Electrical Engineer – Transmission, Substation & Distribution Engineering
Location: Bay Area, CA – Hybrid

Position Overview
We are seeking experienced Electrical Engineers with backgrounds in Transmission Engineering, Substation Engineering, or Distribution Engineering to support complex electric utility engineering projects.
These opportunities are ideal for engineers with strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills who can work independently while collaborating with project managers, engineering teams, field operations, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
Depending on experience, engineers may support transmission line engineering, substation engineering and project execution, or distribution engineering and analytics.
Key Areas of Opportunity
1. Transmission Engineering
Engineers supporting transmission projects will be responsible for:
Leading engineering and design activities for transmission projects.
Performing engineering analyses, technical studies, and conceptual designs.
Resolving engineering issues using sound technical judgment.
Planning and executing assigned work independently with minimal supervision.
Conducting field walkdowns and participating in design review meetings.
Preparing design criteria, specifications, scope documents, technical reports, and other engineering documentation.
Evaluating engineering alternatives and recommending project solutions.
Coordinating with project managers, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
Reviewing engineering consultant deliverables for technical compliance.
Interpreting and applying applicable engineering codes, standards, and regulations.
Supporting restoration planning and root cause analysis.
Reviewing engineering drawings and design revisions.
Supporting emergency engineering requirements and facility issues.
2. Substation Engineering
Engineers supporting substation projects will be responsible for:
Leading engineering and design activities for complex electric substation projects.
Performing engineering analyses, technical studies, and conceptual/detailed designs.
Providing technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineering teams.
Supporting project planning, execution, and delivery.
Developing project specifications and evaluating contractor proposals and technical bids.
Collaborating on permitting, land, regulatory, and technical issues.
Resolving complex engineering challenges using sound engineering judgment.
Coordinating with contractors, vendors, consultants, and public agencies.
Preparing technical presentations, engineering documentation, and project updates.
Interpreting applicable engineering codes, standards, and industry practices.
Engineers supporting distribution analytics will focus on analyzing electric distribution systems, Smart Meter/AMI data, predictive alerts, and operational data to identify and prioritize potential equipment and line defects.
Responsibilities include:
Performing engineering analysis related to electric distribution systems, equipment, and operations.
Analyzing Smart Meter/AMI data and predictive alerts.
Identifying potential transformer defects and overhead/underground electrical line defects.
Translating analytical findings into actionable recommendations for field operations and asset management teams.
Analyzing historical defect data, inspection records, operational data, and other large datasets.
Supporting efforts to improve predictive model accuracy and reduce false positives.
Evaluating and prioritizing distribution system defects using data-driven insights.
Collaborating with field operations, Protection & Control, and engineering teams to validate predictive results.
Applying knowledge of distribution line equipment, protective device settings, distribution operations, and distribution power flow analysis.
Conducting detailed investigations and identifying potential root causes.
Communicating technical findings to engineering and operational stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Minimum 3 years of engineering and design experience for journey-level opportunities; senior substation opportunities may require 8+ years.
Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and manage engineering assignments with minimal supervision.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, operations, project management, contractor, and vendor teams.
Experience preparing technical documentation, reports, specifications, or engineering deliverables.
Preferred Qualifications:
We are particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds such as:
Transmission Engineer:
Transmission line design + 115–500 kV + PLS-CADD/PLS-POLE + GO 95/NESC.
Substation Engineer:
8+ years electrical engineering + substation design + utility projects + project leadership + PE preferred.
Distribution Analytics Engineer:
Electrical engineering + distribution operations + AMI/Smart Meter data + predictive analytics + large datasets.
