Devin Drake posted thisLately, I’ve been hearing more and more about companies pushing “return to office” or shifting from fully remote to hybrid. I was just talking with our CEO, Sandra, and she shared that more candidates are telling her they’re having a harder time finding truly remote roles. That’s been sitting with me. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about working at Boldly Premium Executive Assistants is that it has always been 100% remote. After eight years of working this way, it’s become clear to me how much a flexible, work-from-home setup shapes both my personal and professional life. As with so many people, I do my best work at home. I’ve built an environment that works for me, where I can control the noise, the temperature, and the distractions, and take real, meaningful breaks instead of killing time in a breakroom. When I worked in an office, the hours didn’t translate into focused work the way they do now. That focus allows me to deliver higher-quality work for my team. On a more personal level, remote work means I can take my son to and from school, walk my dogs during the day, manage an autoimmune condition, and have a career that moves with me, even as a military spouse. Those things aren’t just perks, they are what make work sustainable for the long-term. I know remote work isn’t right for every company. It takes intention, clear expectations, and trust to do it well, but when those things are in place, it works and it changes what people are able to show up for, both at work and at home. With so many companies moving back toward the office, I’m so grateful to be somewhere that built remote and flexible work into its foundation from the very beginning. For anyone searching for a remote role, it’s worth asking whether remote work is truly part of a company’s culture or just a perk they’re offering temporarily.

Now let’s do the maths. 119 minutes is c.2 hours. 13 leaders × 2 hours = 26 leadership hours Let’s be conservative. $150 per hour per leader. 26 hours × $150 = $3,900 For one meeting. That is before: • Prep time • Follow-up actions • Context switching • Calendar reshuffles In real terms, that meeting is comfortably a $5,000 decision. Most organisations would never approve a $5,000 spend without a purpose, an owner, and a defined outcome. Yet meetings of this size are approved every day with nothing more than a calendar invite. Assistants already know this. You see the cumulative cost across calendars, not just one meeting in isolation. You see the pattern, the creep, the unnecessary attendees, the meetings that exist because no one stopped to ask why. When an assistant asks: • Who actually needs to be there? • What decision are we making? • Could this be 30 minutes? • Could this be a document instead? That is not admin. That is cost control. That is risk management. That is systems leadership. If it can be read, it shouldn’t be a meeting. If no decision is being made, it shouldn’t be a meeting. If 13 people are invited “just in case”, they shouldn’t be in a meeting. Assistants are already applying this thinking in the background every day. Time is one of the most expensive assets any business has. And assistants are often the only ones trained to protect it.
