Beyond the statistics, food rescue is about the people and partnerships on the ground that get this work done on a day to day basis. Our GM Public Affairs & Sustainability, Kate Eastoe, recently spent time in Wellington with Kaibosh Food Rescue and Tracy Wellington at Kiwi Community Assistance (KCA) Charitable Trust. Together, we’re ensuring surplus food is delivered quickly and in peak condition to agencies like The Salvation Army. This is what our collective support makes possible. As the netball season wraps up, we’re looking back at an incredible journey with our futureFERNS! At Woolworths NZ, we wanted to move beyond sponsorship to become true partners, supporting the 60,000+ Kiwi kids hitting the court each week. Our belief is simple: Fresh fuels the best in all of us. We loved being ‘The Official Orange of the futureFERNS’, making half-time duty a little easier for parents, while our ‘Juicy Highlights’ competition celebrated every win, big and small. Beyond the sidelines, we were proud to reward effort with our Player of the Day certificates and help create memorable moments at futureFERNS festivals - giving teams the perfect way to kick off or wrap up their season in style. From in-store screenings of player shout-outs to hosting Silver Ferns signings, it’s been a privilege to be part of the community and celebrate these young players. A massive thank you to the coaches, parents, and of course, the players. You’ve inspired us all season long. This is a beautiful story about the Kai Ika Project, from RNZ’s Luka Forman. What it doesn't tell you is that all the fish that day - and every Wednesday and Friday - comes from Woolworth's fish and meat supplier Hilton Foods. It was around a tonne of blue moki, tarakihi and snapper the day RNZ reported on this mahi. This is a wonderful example of the work we do to reduce food waste - heads and frames unwanted by some are rangatira kai (food of chiefs) to others. LegaSea’s Kai Ika Project is one of 30 food rescue organisations that will share $1 million in cash operating grants from Woolworths this year, and we'll donate surplus edible food equivalent to millions of meals. What does 800,000 kilometres of zero-emission home deliveries look like? It’s the equivalent of driving from Cape Reinga to Bluff return 190 times, and we’re just getting started. Leading last-mile decarbonisation in the home delivery space takes more than ambitious targets; it requires active, scalable infrastructure on the ground today. We are proud to officially unveil our brand-new, purpose-built 15-bay fast-charging hub at the Penrose eStore! This state-of-the-art facility sets the foundation to fully electrify all 42 delivery trucks operating out of Penrose. Shopping for groceries should be a comfortable experience for everyone. To better support customers who experience sensory overload, we are (quietly) thrilled to be expanding Woolworths' Quiet Hour to every day from 2:30-3:30 PM, in every store. During this dedicated hour, we transform our stores into a low-sensory environment by dimming the lights, turning down the checkout volume, pausing the store radio and PA announcements, and minimising operational noise like shelf-stocking. Nothing beats a warm feast to bring a community together for celebration and reflection. It was our pleasure to host a three-course Matariki meal for a deserving community group. Through our partnership with Mai FM, listeners nominated groups for a special Matariki gift - a feast prepared by renowned Māori chef, Kia Kanuta. After receiving these nominations, Mai FM selected Vinnies - Tāmaki Makaurau as the recipients. Chef Kia wowed attendees with a menu featuring Rēwana Fried Bread, Market Fish, Beef Short Ribs, Hāngi-style Potatoes, and even Sticky Date Pudding. It was the perfect kai to pause, reconnect, and focus on both past achievements and future aspirations. With just under 40 attendees, the evening was filled with laughter and genuine connection. Food rescue is a daily commitment for Woolworths right across Aotearoa. And it takes a collective effort to make that happen: 🏪 100% Store Coverage: Every single one of our stores works alongside at least one food rescue partner. 💚Real Impact: Last year alone, we redirected over 5,000 tonnes of safe, edible surplus food straight to those in need.
