Rural life comes with plenty of challenges, like extreme weather, supply chain delays, and a critical lack of affordable housing. While these may become roadblocks for some, rural entrepreneurs leverage their grit and gumption to transform regional pain points into unique (and scalable!) business models. In today's issue of The Rural Startup, we spotlight three founders who are responding to local challenges with innovative, community-oriented businesses: •Grant Hamel & Jake Rishavy of VeroTouch (Buena Vista) are tackling the affordable housing crisis head-on by refining a construction tech platform to 3D-print homes. •Dr. Lauren Czaplicki of Fungal Solutions-Wildfire Ltd. (Durango) is using fungi to transform hazardous, flammable wood debris into living fire barriers. •Jessie Klein of Klein Makerspace (La Junta) expanded a home-based PPE project into a collaborative downtown incubator for local makers. Learn how these founders are turning rural struggles into community advantages: https://lnkd.in/guMVXEku

There’s something inspiring about spending time in a small Midwestern town. A community of just 10,000 people might not make headlines, but it’s places like these that continue to power American innovation. VeroTouch's CEO Grant Hamel is visiting one of our manufacturing partners today and were reminded why VeroTouch was built the way it was. VeroTouch was born from Midwestern values: hard work, humility, accountability, and a belief that businesses exist to serve families, communities, and customers before themselves. That’s why we choose partners who share those values. What we found was far from the outdated image many people have of manufacturing. Instead, we saw advanced automation, cutting-edge technology, and highly skilled teams producing world-class products with precision and pride. This is modern American manufacturing at its best. The future of onshoring won't be built solely in major cities. It will be built in communities like these—where craftsmanship, innovation, and commitment to quality still matter. American manufacturing is alive and well, and we're proud to be partnering with the companies like Pella Corporation and leaders like Dave Fleming and Cai Blakeley, who are showing us all the way. #AmericanManufacturing #MadeInAmerica #Onshoring #AdvancedManufacturing #ManufacturingInnovation #IndustrialTechnology #Automation #SupplyChain #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityDriven #ManufacturingExcellence #VeroTouch

Structural walls printed in days, not framed over weeks. 3D printed concrete homes are showing up on real MLS listings right now. Most buyers have no idea what they're looking at. We put together three things every homebuyer should know before touring one. These homes are rated for 2-hour fire resistance, engineered to handle 250 mph winds, and built to withstand seismic activity. That's a different conversation than traditional wood-frame construction. But here's what matters most to buyers: the building codes and inspections protecting you are the same ones behind every home sale. The technology is new. The standards aren't. If you're touring a 3D printed home, know what makes the construction different, understand what to inspect, and always ask the builder about their printing process and material specs. The first wave of these homes is already on the market. The buyers who do their homework now will be the ones making confident offers. 🏠

Construction is the last great American industry to fully embrace robotics and automation. In our historic housing affordability crisis, that simply can't continue. Massive thanks to Frannie Matthews and PBS12 for sitting down with our Chief Communications Officer, Jake Rishavy, to explore the implications of emerging construction technology can shape housing today and into the future. #Construction #Architecture #Innovation #Engineering #Sustainability #3DPrinting #SustainableBuilding #RealEstate #AdditiveManufacturing #AffordableHousing Grant Hamel Austin Trumbull, PE Jake Rishavy Felix Heeter Bob Lee, CFP®, AEP®, CEPA® Robert Higgins Jon Belkowitz, PhD, PE John Vandewalle
A few weeks ago, I sat down with Jake Rishavy, Chief Communications Officer at VeroTouch, a company that is leveraging robotics and automation to build 3D-printed homes... and it's bigger than just the building; they are focused on refining processes and leveraging technology to drive down the cost of housing. We are honored to be one of the fastest growing startups in Colorado's mountain communities, and we simply couldn't have gotten this far, this fast without the amazing collaboration of our public sector partners. That's true both here locally in Salida and Chafee County and especially so with our friends at the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Alongside our public partners, we're tackling the defining issue of our time - housing affordability - with the private sector, technology driven approach that we think it takes to make a meaningful change for our communities. Huge thanks to Eve Lieberman, Jeff Kraft (he/him), Michelle Hadwiger, and countless others on the OEDIT team, and Deborah Cameron here locally at the Chaffee County EDC. #Construction #Architecture #Innovation #Engineering #Sustainability #3DPrinting #SustainableBuilding #RealEstate #AdditiveManufacturing #AffordableHousing Grant Hamel Austin Trumbull, PE Jake Rishavy Felix Heeter Bob Lee, CFP®, AEP®, CEPA® Robert Higgins Jon Belkowitz, PhD, PE John Vandewalle
