Discovering great songwriters is only the beginning. Supporting them to build enduring careers is the real - and most rewarding - work. In the latest edition of Music Publishing 101, Hollie Boston, Director of A&R at UMPG, shares the qualities our A&R team looks for when discovering and developing songwriting talent. The strongest careers are built on more than a single great song; having a distinctive musical identity is key - whilst still being versatile and able to collaborate with an artist and understand their vision. Our A&R teams work with songwriters at every stage - helping them develop their creative voice and finding ways to break down barriers. It’s all about timing, connection, and the perfect song for the moment. #UMPG #FindTheStory

In the latest episode we look at recoupment in music publishing. How do songwriter advances work? How can songwriters keep track of royalty payments? And what does it mean to be recouped? Kevin Cady (Kevin C.), Head of Finance, the Americas & EVP Global Business Strategy at UMPG, breaks it down.

Who actually owns a song? In the latest episode of Music Publishing 101, Whitney A. Smith, Associate Director of Business Affairs at UMPG, breaks down one of the most important concepts in music publishing: song ownership.   Who owns the master and who owns the composition? And within that composition – how are the rights structured between artists, co-writers and producers? Having a clear understanding of music rights is important for anyone working within the music industry – from songwriters just starting out, to music supervisors looking to license a song for their next project. #UMPG #AWorldAhead #SongsAreWorthIt

As AI continues to reshape the future of music, one principle remains clear: artists must stay at the centre of the conversation. At the United Nations' AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, UMG Chief Digital Officer Michael Nash joined EGOT-winning artist, John Legend, Richard Kerris from NVIDIA, Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI, Kakul Srivastava, CEO of Splice, and Andrew Sanchez, CEO of Udio, for a discussion on how AI is transforming music - from discovery and creativity to fan experiences and innovation. The conversation explored both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with this new era of technology, emphasizing that AI should empower human creativity - not replace it. As John Legend, said: “AI can bring shortcuts and augmentations to your artistry and be used as a tool to access what’s within you, and to support and maintain it. Don’t forget the core of what makes you interesting and special." Michael Nash added: "Centre the conversation on artists, defend their rights, advance their interests, from that foundation you build all the commercial and creativity opportunities.” Throughout the discussion, speakers reinforced a shared vision: AI can unlock new creative possibilities when it is developed responsibly, respects creators' rights, and ensures artists remain the driving force behind innovation. At UMG, we're committed to building an artist-centric AI ecosystem - working alongside trusted technology partners to help creators harness new tools while protecting the value of human artistry.
