THE HIGHLIGHT OF ET WLF 2026: REFORM, SCALE AND EXECUTION The defining moment of the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2026 was Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s address to business and global leaders. What struck me most was the emphasis on continuity of reform. In an increasingly uncertain world, India’s advantage is not merely its growth rate or demographic scale. It is the ability to pursue a consistent long-term direction while continuing to reform, build and execute. The Prime Minister spoke about the next generation of reforms—making it easier to do business and easier to live, while strengthening manufacturing, technology, innovation, food processing and the green and blue economies. His message on industrial policy was equally clear: incentives such as PLI must ultimately translate into real production, greater domestic value addition, exports and jobs. The metric cannot be announcements; it has to be outcomes. Technology is increasingly becoming the operating system of governance. From e-KYC and digital authentication to QR payments, tax filing and public services, India has demonstrated what digital infrastructure can achieve at population scale. But as digitalisation grows, so must safeguards against fraud and manipulation. Infrastructure was another recurring theme—not just highways and bridges, but rail safety, border connectivity, technology-led planning and the systematic removal of everyday bottlenecks. For me, the larger message was this: India’s next phase cannot be built on aspiration alone. It requires aspiration + reform + technology + manufacturing + infrastructure + relentless execution. The global environment will remain unpredictable. There will be geopolitical shocks, technological disruption and economic uncertainty. But countries that combine political stability, policy continuity and the willingness to keep reforming create something extremely valuable: confidence. Confidence for citizens. Confidence for entrepreneurs. Confidence for investors. And confidence to think at scale. A powerful address—and undoubtedly the highlight of #ETWLF2026. #TheEconomicTimes #NarendraModi #IndiaGrowth #EconomicReforms #Manufacturing #DigitalIndia #Infrastructure #Innovation #Leadership

  • MEDIA’S NEXT BATTLE: MONETISING ATTENTION, NOT JUST BUILDING AUDIENCE One of the most thought-provoking conversations at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2026 was on the future of media, sports and content—and the economics behind spectacular audience growth. Satyan Gajwani and Uday Shankar The JioStar story is remarkable. Sports, particularly cricket and the IPL, helped take the digital platform from virtually zero to around 600 million monthly active users. But scale creates its own question: Once you have the audience, how do you sustainably monetise it? The early decision to make IPL freely available was a powerful customer-acquisition strategy. Build habit and scale first; introduce monetisation progressively thereafter. Yet sports also exposes one of media’s biggest challenges today: the escalating cost of rights. Sports can deliver extraordinary reach, engagement and loyalty, but if rights inflation runs substantially ahead of monetisation, even the most attractive property can become economically difficult. That led to a much broader point about media. For well over a century, our industry has largely depended on two revenue streams: Advertising + Subscription. Both are now under pressure. The future therefore cannot merely be about creating more content. AI will ensure there is dramatically more content anyway. The real challenge is to find new ways of monetising the relationship with the audience—commerce, premium experiences, memberships, licensing, data, direct-to-fan offerings and other services we probably have not fully imagined yet. I also liked the distinction across media businesses. Entertainment remains fundamentally resilient. Sports offers extraordinary upside, but its economics depend heavily on disciplined rights pricing. And news perhaps faces the greatest need for reinvention, because platforms have disrupted both distribution and advertising economics. There was another interesting prediction: in a world overwhelmed by content, brands may become more valuable, not less. When everybody can create, trust and curation become scarce. That is particularly relevant for news. Perhaps the next media winner will not simply be the company producing the most content or acquiring the largest audience. It will be the company that can turn attention into engagement, engagement into trust—and trust into sustainable economic value. #ETWLF2026 #TheEconomicTimes #Media #FutureOfMedia #SportsBusiness #IPL #Streaming #ArtificialIntelligence #NewsMedia #Entertainment #DigitalMedia
