The Trail Conservancy reposted this
The Wishbone Bridge, which spans Lady Bird Lake in Austin, is a three-pronged pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting Longhorn Shores, Canterbury Street, and the Holly Peninsula along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. For the first time, Austin’s full 10-mile loop is complete. No traffic crossings, no detours. Each leg stretches over 230 feet and meets at a 76-foot-wide central plaza designed for people to stop, rest, and take in the lake. It’s the first bridge of its kind in Austin, and we’re told there isn’t another one like it in the country. This month, Austin has the honor of hosting Greater & Greener, the premier conference for urban parks and public space leaders from across North America. As we welcome visitors to our city and the Ann & Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, we want to highlight a question at the center of many conversations this week: What does it take to build and sustain great parks? At The Trail Conservancy, we're proud to co-host Greater & Greener alongside the City of Austin and Austin Parks and Recreation, and we're excited to showcase the power of stewardship, collaboration, and community investment in public spaces. Read the full article below, and if you'll be attending Greater & Greener, we would love to hear: What public space challenge is your city working to solve right now?

One year ago, the Holly Fishing Pier opened to the community — and since then, it’s become so much more than a place to fish. It’s become a gathering space for learning, celebration, art, and connection. Over the past year, the pier has been home to some incredible moments: 🎣 In July, the next generation of anglers cast their lines during a community fishing derby with the Mendez Recreation Center. ☃️ In December, families gathered along the waterfront to celebrate the season at Santa on the Trail. 🎨 In March, the site welcomed artist T.J. Lemanski’s 2026 TEMPO on the Trail installation, Cenotaphs. 🪻 And this May, the first wildflowers of the season bloomed — a reminder that this space continues to grow alongside the community. This project would not have been possible without the vision of the East Cesar Chavez and Holly Neighborhood residents and their continuous work and advocacy for the parkland they have loved for generations. A special thank you to the design team and contractors who brought the community’s vision for this space to life: Ten Eyck Landscape Architects, Inc., Square One Consultants, Inc, Strata Landscape, GarzaEMC, Siglo Group, Structures, CNG Engineering, Sweeney + Associates, and Altura Solutions, LLC.

The Rainey Street Trailhead represents what happens when innovative design, collaboration, and community vision come together. Two years ago, we could only imagine what this space would become. Today, it’s a joy to see children exploring the nature play area, residents connecting with the lake from the floating dock, neighbors gathering for music on the main lawn, and the community experiencing a more seamless connection from Rainey Street to the Trail and Lady Bird Lake. Rainey Street Trailhead: Nature-Based Infrastructure at the Urban Edge https://lnkd.in/gV35Eecq Rainey Street Trailhead is modest in scale, yet its impact lies in its clarity. Community priorities were translated into a legible ecological structure and an accessible public space. The project demonstrates how compact sites can support habitat, access, and recreation within growing urban districts. Article by dwg. This past weekend, we welcomed nine new temporary art installations to the Butler Trail as part of TEMPO on the Trail. In partnership with Austin Art In Public Places, TEMPO gives emerging local artists a platform to create site-responsive work inspired by the landscape—and the spirit—of Austin. For the next year, these pieces will live along the Trail, offering new moments of discovery, reflection, and connection for everyone who passes by.
