Earlier this month, a case against Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, went to trial. It alleged that the company had perpetrated a range of harms, most notably that its products “exploit and manipulate its most vulnerable consumers: teenagers and children.” On Wednesday, Meta reached a settlement: it would pay more than $12 billion, over ten years, and make a slew of changes to its platforms—including sweeping restrictions on teen-age use. “There is much more to be done in the fight to make technology platforms safe, especially for children,” Nathaniel Lubin writes. When Hanif Abdurraqib was a kid, he imagined that he and his friends would grow up to live in the exact same neighborhood, on the exact same street. “It seemed logical!” he writes. Of course, in the real world, they’ve ended up scattered across different states and different time zones. “But we also live within the black and blue bubbles of a group chat that has, in a way, become its own neighborhood, its own universe,” he counters.
