    We talk a lot about 2050 But perhaps we need to talk much more about what are doing today and the next few years. Since the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, global warming has continued to increase… GHGs continue to increase… The planet is accumulating more heat and climate extremes are becoming more pronounced. You just need to plan a visit to Europe this summer and you will experience this firsthand. But one thing we need to stop at: Our remaining carbon budget for a 50% chance of limiting warming to 1.5 deg C can be finished in around 3 years. Think about that for a moment. Think again. 3 YEARS We already have 2050 strategies and commitments. Yet the carbon budget associated with 1.5 deg C is being consumed today. This doesn’t mean that 2029 is some kind of climate deadline, or that we suddenly cross 1.5 deg C the moment the budget reaches zero. Climate science doesn’t work like that.     Data Centers Go Underwater What if the future of data-center cooling isn't more air conditioning—but the ocean itself? China has been experimenting with an unconventional approach: placing data-center computing infrastructure underwater and using the surrounding seawater as a natural heat sink. The concept is powerful. 🌊 Seawater absorbs heat from the equipment ❄️ Natural water cooling reduces dependence on conventional air conditioning ⚡ Less cooling infrastructure can potentially reduce energy consumption 🏙️ Offshore deployment could also reduce pressure on valuable urban land And the idea isn't purely theoretical. China's Hainan Underwater Data Center project has demonstrated subsea computing infrastructure, with servers housed in sealed modules on the seabed. The surrounding seawater provides continuous heat exchange, while the enclosed environment helps protect the equipment from the marine environment. But there is an important distinction: the viral image dramatically suggests a futuristic underwater city, while the real project is much more modest—and technically grounded. The bigger opportunity is what it represents. As AI and cloud computing drive explosive demand for electricity and cooling, rethinking where and how data centers operate could become just as important as improving the chips inside them. The future data center may not always look like a giant warehouse on land. It could be underwater, underground, floating—or colocated with abundant renewable energy. Millions of tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans every year, with bottles, packaging, fishing gear and other waste accumulating across marine ecosystems. But the real challenge begins long before plastic reaches the sea. It starts with how products are designed, produced, used, collected and discarded. Once plastic escapes into rivers and oceans, recovery becomes far more difficult—and fragmentation can turn larger items into microplastics that spread through ecosystems. The solution cannot be endless cleanup.
