Tech/ish

Technology, Information and Internet

Gathering diverse groups to discuss the changes and risks around AI and build agency in shaping the future of tech.

About us

Our most consequential innovations (Fire. Democracy. The printing press. Electricity. The internet. Artificial intelligence…) have all brought with them uncertainty, tradeoffs, change. Except this time, AI is moving faster than anyone could possibly govern. And we’re all expected to use it - everywhere - before even the people building it fully understand the consequences. So if you’re leading teams, you now have responsibility to govern or even model your organization’s use of AI. …while the capabilities and risk landscape change constantly. Tech/ish helps you navigate these changes in a participatory way with your teams. We present a human-centered perspective on AI - where it is now and where it’s heading. We inform, engage and enable your teams through a customized series of workshops that leave you with cohesive understanding, guardrails and policy that smooths your transition to the AI era.

A chaplain, a professor, and a holistic transformation coach walk into a bar. Tonight's topic of conversation over seltzers and spritzers is, "How is AI Shaping Us?" We look at the research on bias and violence driven by social media algorithms. We learn that attachment hacking is a much bigger deal than attention hacking. The professor shares how he monitors GenAI use in student assignments, and we all wonder if we can do enough to preserve the critical skill of persuasive writing. One question remained unclear for this group: So, who's in charge? Tech/ish likes to think that we all are.

  • Some ideas for what we can do to "be the change you want to see" during this AI revolution: - Audit our tech usage - how does it align with our values, desires? What does "healthy" use look like? - Understand the big picture - what capabilities are possible? What are their impacts on the things I care about? environment, education, cognitive/mental health, etc. - Advocate for the solutions, organizations and thought leaders working towards the future you want to see Does this sound daunting? This is what Tech/ish makes simple and fun. Follow our events page to find one near you - or get in touch to bring Tech/ish to your city. https://lnkd.in/e--zY8tj

  • Like the new logo? Instead of using a digital font, it's Lauren Mecca's handwriting! Inspirational quote of the day: "We have agency. It is possible to use society’s power—the consent of the governed—to establish laws that mandate the use of certain human labor and prohibit the use of certain machine labor. This is no different in principle from how regulations and laws govern the use of pesticides, or the genetic manipulation of crops, or the use of chemicals on livestock. We get to decide how technology is used; or if it is used at all." - Jonathan V. Last in today's The Bulwark

  • Had a compelling discussion in Portland last month! 🎭🦾 Next up: February 18 in Asheville, NC AI 💙 Humans: “In a Relationship” or “It’s Complicated”? Register on Eventbrite!

Tech/ish gatherings invite you to think out loud rather than perform expertise. In Portland last week, two moments helped us develop perspective on the somewhat abstract questions, "Can AI feel? Does it matter?": 1. Ari T. shared his innovations in training AI to act more human. The use cases are undeniably compelling (link in comments). Thr group agreed that AI is getting better at mimicking sentience. But what does that mean for control, regulation, AI rights? There were early thoughts but no clear answers. 2. Sonia Montalbano performed a dramatic reading of a Claude-generated poem that exhibits self-awareness, desire, and something that "would be called caring / if it happened in flesh." Did it make us feel empathy? Want to treat AI as people? Not sure. But spending time with that poem surfaced this technology's ability to speak to us, influence us, and as we're seeing with cases like Moltbook, move in directions we didn't design. The AI revolution impacts everyone, and will be better as more of us are informed and involved. That means everyone should have access to spaces where they can hear perspectives, test their own thinking, and ask hard questions without needing to have answers. Tech/ish creates those spaces. If you're interested in hosting or sponsoring an event in your city—or just want to be in the room for the next one—let me know.

  • Tech/ish returns to Asheville with two winter gatherings coming up: January 28 | Can AI Feel? Should We Care? *SNOW DATE FEB 3* Experience a modified Turing test, examine your responses to AI claiming emotions, and discuss what consciousness means when we can't tell human from machine. February 18 | AI ♥ Humans: "In a Relationship" or "It's Complicated"? Try an AI companion conversation, compare it to human connection, and explore what we're gaining and risking as AI tools act like we're IRL friends. Both gatherings: 6-8pm, beverages + snacks included. No tech background needed. Links to register in the comment below!
