A funding cut shouldn’t be the first time leadership asks, “What happens if this revenue disappears?” For nonprofit Boards and executive teams, funding resiliency starts with understanding where the organization is vulnerable before something changes. Four questions worth asking now: 1️⃣ Which funding sources would hurt us most if they disappeared tomorrow? 2️⃣ How much of our revenue is restricted—and how much flexibility do we actually have? 3️⃣ How long could we continue operating if a major funding source were delayed or reduced? 4️⃣ Do we know which programs, expenses and commitments we would protect first? You don’t need to predict the next funding shift. But you should know how your organization would respond to one. That’s the difference between reacting to a funding crisis and being prepared for it. #nonprofit #nonprofitleadership #nonprofitfinance #boardleadership #teamcarey

Funding resilience isn’t built after the cut lands. It’s built before. In her latest article, Carmen Gandulla, a Carey & Co COO, shares a different way for nonprofit leaders to think about funding—one that starts with mission and connects the dollars to partnerships, community impact and operational strategy. Her framework centers on five C’s: Collective. Coalition. Community. Constituent. Coins. Together, they challenge organizations to look beyond the next grant and ask a bigger question: Are we building an organization that can sustain the work when funding changes? 📖 Read Carmen’s full article to explore the Funding Resilience Playbook. 🎙️ And stay tuned! Carmen will be joining us on the Carey & Co. podcast to dig deeper into the experiences and lessons behind the framework. #nonprofit #nonprofitleadership #nonprofitfundraising #fundraisingstrategy #teamcarey

Federal grant requirements continue to evolve, making it more important than ever for nonprofits to ensure their financial and compliance practices are ready for what's ahead. If federal grants are part of your funding strategy, this is a timely update worth reading. Thank you to Kelly Martin for breaking down what these proposed changes could mean for organizations receiving federal funding and for highlighting practical steps leaders can take now rather than waiting until the fall. #nonprofitfinance #grantmanagement #nonprofitleadership #federalfunding
If your nonprofit receives federal grants, this post is for you. On May 29 (my first day at Carey & Co!) OMB proposed major changes to the rules governing federal grantmaking. If finalized, they take effect October 1. The big shift is more federal discretion over grants — including the ability to suspend or cancel them mid-performance — and tighter compliance expectations across the board. Over 100,000 comments were submitted during the public comment period (read: this is a big deal). The TL;DR is: Audit your grant financial infrastructure now — not in September. -Can you track restricted and unrestricted funds separately? -Do you have grant-specific accounting codes? -Is your cost allocation methodology documented? -Could you survive a Single Audit tomorrow? Even prior to this announcement, the Carey team had put together a practical guide on building grant infrastructure, and as it turns out, it covers exactly this. Link to the guide in comments. Here to answer/triage your questions. #NonprofitFinance #GrantManagement #NonprofitLeadership #FederalFunding

It's exciting to see the collaboration already taking shape! As our teams continue to come together, we're expanding the knowledge, experience, and capabilities we bring to nonprofit organizations. We look forward to what's ahead and the impact we'll make together.
Yesterday, Travis Carey and I had the opportunity to spend the day with our new colleagues at Lautman Maska Neill & Company. We covered strategy, integration and the future, but one thing quickly became clear: by joining forces with Tiffany Neill, Lisa Maska, CFRE and the entire Lautman team, we've added an extraordinary amount of talent and experience to our organization. Bringing Lautman into Carey & Co significantly expands the ways we can support nonprofit organizations. Together, Schultz & Williams and Lautman now provide expertise across the entire spectrum of philanthropy, from the $10 donor to the $10 million philanthropist. And we're doing it at a scale that allows us to serve some of the world's most ambitious nonprofits while maintaining the personalized, high-touch partnership our clients expect. I'm incredibly proud to help lead what we've built together. Just a year ago, this vision felt ambitious. Today, it's becoming reality.
