The smarter X’s “For You” algorithm gets at reading your behavior, the further it drifts from what you actually want. A new study partially supported by Stanford HAI finds a fundamental misalignment between algorithmically curated feeds and users' stated personal values — and it comes down to how platforms measure interest. “The values that we hold — what we really care about — should be just as informative to the platforms as engagement,” says Michael Bernstein, professor of computer science and Stanford HAI Senior Fellow.
