“Neurology Is Driving the Next Wave of Behavioral Health in Skilled Nursing” Shannon Abbott, RN CEO, Spectrum Medical Partners When we look at skilled nursing today, the dominant diagnosis category is no longer orthopedic. It’s neurological. Stroke. Dementia. Parkinson’s. Traumatic brain injury. And here’s the important connection: Neurological disease is brain disease. And brain disease drives psychiatric complexity. Thirty to fifty percent of stroke patients develop depression. Dementia drives agitation, paranoia, sleep disturbance. Parkinson’s patients frequently develop hallucinations and psychosis. As neurological acuity rises, behavioral demand rises in parallel. Facilities feel that pressure operationally: • Higher staff strain • Greater regulatory scrutiny on psychotropics • Increased readmissions Industry-wide, 14–17% of long-stay residents remain on antipsychotics. That’s not just a clinical issue — it’s a regulatory and financial risk.
