  • These lakes and ridgelines in the John Muir Wilderness near Bishop give are spectacular. Quiet mornings on the water, long backpacking days, and winter ski lines that feel a world away. They stay this special only if we show up with care. Whether you’re fishing, paddling, hiking, or skiing: • Stay on durable surfaces • Pack out everything • Keep camps and boats away from fragile shorelines • Know the rules (permits, fire restrictions, group size) Wild places stay wild because of the choices we make. • 🍄 Meet one of our featured speakers: Chad Hyatt! Join chef, expert forager, and wild mushroom enthusiast Chad Hyatt for a cooking demonstration at the Lake Tahoe Mushroom Festival on October 3rd. Chad will dive into the often-overlooked nuances of mushroom edibility and culinary use. He’ll challenge conventional wisdom, rethink flavor pairings, and share a fresh take on how we judge, prepare, and celebrate mushrooms in the kitchen. And yes… you’ll get to taste some seriously yummy food. A classically trained chef and passionate forager based in Northern California, Chad is known for turning local, seasonal, and wild mushrooms into approachable comfort food. He’s cooked in restaurants and private clubs across the Bay Area, hosts wild mushroom dinners, teaches classes, and shares his knowledge at festivals across the country. Don’t miss this one! 📍 The Hangar, South Lake Tahoe 📅 October 3, 2026 Learn more and buy tickets through the link in our bio.

  • Some of our best outdoor experiences happen in Wilderness. Whether you hike, backpack, climb, paddle, trail run, ski, or just need the quiet of undeveloped public lands, these places are irreplaceable. Right now, the Department of the Interior is reviewing the policies that guide how Wilderness and wilderness-eligible lands are managed. They’re asking for public input. No specific changes have been proposed yet, but this comment period matters, especially given the broader push to open more public lands to development and extraction. This is our chance to tell them why Wilderness experiences matter. Use the Link in bio to leave a comment (takes just a couple minutes). Add a personal note about a place or activity that matters to you, and why you want future generations to experience these wild places too. Deadline is August 14. Protect what makes these places special. Huge thanks to Outdoor Alliance for making it easy to take action.

  • 🎣 Big shoutout to our SNAP AmeriCorps members Jack Roney and James Johnson! On July 18 they represented SYRCL at the U.S. Forest Service’s annual Packer Lake Fish Day, helping families explore our local watersheds through hands-on learning, fish & herpetology displays, a casual fishing derby, and even fish-print t-shirts. Days before the event, Packer Lake was stocked with thousands of rainbow trout—many kids caught their very first fish (and some even won tagged prize fish!). These kinds of days spark lifelong connections to healthy lakes, streams, and forests. Jack and James did an awesome job sharing SYRCL’s work in the North Yuba and inspiring the next generation of nature lovers. 🔗 Link in bio to read the full story! #SYRCL #PackerLakeFishDay #SNAPAmeriCorps #YubaWatershed #WatershedEducation #TahoeNationalForest #NorthYuba

  • Thank you, Congressman Kiley, for co-sponsoring the Public Lands Workforce Stability Act (H.R. 8523). This important bill helps protect the staffing levels our federal land management agencies need to keep public lands safe, accessible, and well managed. Adequate workforce support means stronger wildfire mitigation, better permitting, and continued access to trails, campgrounds, and ranger services that communities and visitors rely on. We appreciate leadership that recognizes how essential these services are to our public lands, local economies, and quality of life. #PublicLands #PublicLandsWorkforceStabilityAct
