Same beer. Better brewing. 🍺🔥 The Wall Street Journal highlighted our partnership with The HEINEKEN Company and EDP this week — 100 MWh of Rondo thermal energy storage at their brewery near Lisbon. Powered by solar, the system delivers continuous steam for every stage of the brewing process, from boiling the malt to pasteurization, cutting operational emissions by 25-40% and reducing dependence on volatile fossil fuel prices. Industrial heat is one of the largest, least-talked-about energy markets in the world. One fifth of all global energy goes into the production of heat for industry, including food & beverage, chemicals, refining, mineral processing, paper, pharmaceuticals, and yes, beer. The industrial energy transition is here — and it runs on the same steam that's always powered the world's factories, breweries, and plants. Thank you to HEINEKEN, EDP, European Investment Bank (EIB), and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst for leading the way. #IndustrialHeat #ThermalEnergyStorage #EnergyStorage https://lnkd.in/gGnGUmnT

Europe just sent a clear message: industrial energy storage is critical infrastructure. The European Commission's first-ever tripartite agreement on energy storage puts a spotlight on what Europe needs next: real projects turning clean power into reliable industrial energy. "The objective of this first tripartite is to accelerate the deployment of storage in the short term, which will make the electricity system more secure and flexible." We're so proud to see Rondo included with two 100 MWh heat battery projects (Covestro in Germany and HEINEKEN / EDP in Portugal) as "projects demonstrating benefits & potential practical applications of the tripartite." In Germany, Rondo and Covestro are building a 100 MWh Rondo Heat Battery at Covestro's Brunsbüttel chemical production site to store renewable electricity as heat and deliver continuous high-pressure steam, helping replace natural gas boilers and expected to avoid up to 13,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. In Portugal, The HEINEKEN Company, EDP and Rondo are deploying another 100 MWh heat battery project near Lisbon, charged by on-site solar and a renewable PPA to deliver continuous steam, expected to avoid an estimated 6,600 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Same idea, big impact: store low-cost renewable electricity as heat, then deliver the steam that industry needs to keep running. Clean heat is being built now, full steam ahead! https://lnkd.in/dS94ZPwR

I had a great time sitting down with Bronte Wilson and Adam White to chat all things Rondo Energy, thermal energy storage and how solutions like ours will help to decarbonise industrial process heat - an energy-intensive sector that is often overlooked!
“We no longer have to say industrial heat is a hard to abate area. We have the solutions. Now it’s just about deploying them, in the same way it was about deploying solar 10 or 15 years ago.” That’s Kira Rundel, Ph.D. from Rondo Energy on this week’s Energy Unpacked episode. Industrial heat accounts for around 20% of Australia’s total energy use, but for years it’s been treated as too hard to electrify. Rondo’s heat battery technology is starting to change that picture. In this episode, we get into which industries are best suited, the commercial models meeting customers where they are, and recent VEECs changes and Powercor tariff shifts supporting the overall economics. 🎧 Listen now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. #EnergyUnpacked #EnergyTransition #EnergyPodcast #IndustrialHeat #HeatBatteries

Three recent reports are telling an important story. 1) IEA's Global Energy Review 2026 points out that we're now living in the solar+storage era. Nothing is growing faster. Solar PV led 2025 global supply growth, and battery storage was the fastest-growing power technology, nearly doubling. The IEA's word for it: "the Age of Electricity." We're now entering another new era, a next tranche of electrification: industrial heat delivered by electric heat batteries. Zero carbon, lower cost than fuels, and vastly lower risk in both cost and availability. The technologies are becoming ready, multiple players are entering the market, and the markets are opening as fast as they're allowed to. 2) PatSnap's report on heat battery patents shows 300% growth in recent years. Rondo is the global leader here, with a vastly larger portfolio than others; we've been driving hard on innovations in process efficiency and energy costs for producers ranging from mines to metals, from molecules to chemicals and fuels, and from farms to foods and beverages. In 2023 Tesla assessed the total heat battery market at €3T, and SystemIQ said heat batteries could cut world CO2 emissions by 20%. We've been working like crazy toward those goals, proving and improving our technology building projects around the world. Hypergrowth is coming: 3) McKinsey's recent analysis says heat battery markets are opening *now*, with "projects delivering IRRs above 15% by 2030 in most markets, a €16 billion buildout opportunity." So. A quarter of all the fossil fuel burned on earth makes heat for the things we use, wear, and eat. Heat has ben the hardest sector to decarbonize because it needs to be cheap, hot, and constant. And we now have the technology and the primary energy supply to check all those boxes. We're building big and ready to build much, much bigger. So. What's slowing us down? Grid regulations. "Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink." Or put another way, "in our jurisdiction, decarbonization is both strictly required and strictly forbidden." Heat batteries are *not* continuous must-serve loads. They're an entirely new class of grid assets: dispatchable loads, controllable just like generation, cutting costs for other electricity users, cutting costs for grid operators, and extending the foundation for our new economy. Today's regulatory frame misses this. Rondo is working around the world with customers, TSOs, ISOs, and regulators to modernize system rules to reflect the unique value that heat batteries bring to the grid and to the economy. I would love your thoughts, your advice, your help as we work on these matters. We've had our heads down on the technology side -- now this modernization matter sets the speed limit, for us all. This transition will go as fast as it's allowed to go. Let's go faster. #ThermalEnergyStorage #HeatBatteries #IndustrialDecarbonization #AgeOfElectricity

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗹’𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲? That was the question I brought to ERSE’s CONVERSE event this week in Lisbon – and the timing could not be better... Portugal has built one of the cleanest power systems in Europe. But much of its industry still produces heat by burning imported gas and other fossil fuels on-site. That is the next frontier: 🔥#HeatBatteries can help bridge that gap: charging when renewable electricity is abundant and cheap, storing it as high-temperature heat, and delivering steam or hot air when factories need it. 💪 This matters for #decarbonisation – but also for #competitiveness, grid #flexibility and energy #security. And this is no longer theoretical. 🍺 In Portugal, Rondo Energy is already working with EDP and The HEINEKEN Company on a 100 MWh heat battery project in Lisbon – the largest thermal storage project in the Iberian Peninsula. The question now is how to move from one project to twenty. That will require #regulation that recognises flexible industrial demand: 1️⃣ Flexible grid access, as Spain is now starting to develop 2️⃣ Grid fees that value controllable loads, as Germany has begun to do 3️⃣ Flexibility markets that also reward multi-hour thermal storage 4️⃣ Clear, stackable support schemes – including CEEs for industrial heat. 5️⃣ Fiscal level-playing-field for electricity vs hydrocarbons. Portugal has already shown that it can lead Europe on renewable electricity -> it now has the chance to lead on clean industrial heat. Thank you to Pedro Verdelho, António Domingues and the full ERSE team for the invitation, to Jean Barroca Secretário de Estado Adjunto e da Energia Ministério do Ambiente e Energia, and to Luís Rebelo Cleantech for Iberia, Antonio Caixinha EDP,Luis Cardoso Siemens Energy, António Coutinho Associação Portuguesa da Energia , Bruno J. Via C&EN - "Thermal batteries offer a way to stockpile renewable energy when it’s cheap and use it later. And because they store that energy as heat—which chemical plants and many other industrial facilities need—thermal batteries can beat lithium-ion batteries and other means of energy storage intended to decarbonize heavy industry. The first few installations are running now, and the industry seems poised to expand if the results—and the cost savings—live up to the promise." Rondo Heat Batteries are now in daily operation around the world. We're also in construction with Covestro in Germany to serve ten percent of the required steam at their site, saving up to 13,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. A new McKinsey & Company report highlights a rapidly-strengthening business case for industrials in Europe to electrify their industrial heat loads with thermal energy storage. We see this momentum firsthand. Two foundational trends are driving this opportunity: 1) Expanding low-cost electricity windows — As renewable penetration increases, price volatility is rising, with McKinsey noting a 60–170% increase in annual price variability. Technologies like the Rondo Heat Battery capture these low-cost hours (typically 6–8 hours/day) and convert them into reliable, 24/7 industrial heat. 2) Growing incentives for flexible load — Regulators and grid operators are increasingly rewarding industrial processes that can shift demand off-peak and provide grid flexibility. This unlocks additional cost advantages for electrified heat solutions. At the same time, the report recognizes that navigating electricity markets can be complex for industrial operators. That’s why Rondo offers a Heat-as-a-Service model. We partner with project finance and energy suppliers to deliver a simple outcome: low-cost, zero-carbon steam, with no operational complexity. This model is already being deployed: • Our first European Rondo Heat Battery is under construction with Covestro in Germany: https://lnkd.in/gA7ywgDc • We recently announced a new project with Heineken in Portugal: https://lnkd.in/gYBnehym As the report underscores, industrial players who move early and build the right partnerships stand to unlock significant value. We’re excited to help make that transition straightforward and economically compelling. https://lnkd.in/ejbVMdK4
