What does scaling a quantum computer actually look like? Rigetti Computing’s answer: don’t try to put everything on one enormous chip. Connect smaller ones. Its Cepheus-1-108Q system uses twelve interconnected 9-qubit chiplets to create a 108-qubit superconducting quantum computer — an architecture Rigetti is betting can provide a path toward much larger systems. But another part of the Rigetti story in 2026 may be just as important: where those systems are going. India’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing has ordered a 108-qubit Rigetti system for its Bengaluru supercomputing center. Rigetti is also delivering a Novera system to the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center for a new hybrid quantum-classical testbed being developed with HPE. That’s a glimpse of a future where quantum computers aren’t isolated machines sitting off to the side. They become another computing resource — integrated with HPC, accessed by researchers and eventually called on for the workloads they do best. Scaling the processor and figuring out how it fits into the broader computing ecosystem have to happen together.
