  • Over seven days in May, a Rice University presidential delegation traveled to New Delhi, Mumbai and Singapore, holding meetings with leading universities, research institutes and government agencies across two of the world's most consequential research economies. Led by President Reginald DesRoches and joined by Executive Vice President for Research David Sholl and Vice President for Global Strategy Caroline Levander, the delegation explored partnerships in areas of strategic importance to Rice including AI, bioengineering, health and medicine with opportunities spanning joint research and student exchange. As Levander notes in the video, this trip closes the first chapter of Rice Global's discovery work in the region. Phase two begins now. • How does a second national tradition sharpen the study of medicine? At the Rice Global Paris Center, lecturer in medical humanities Cameron Dezen Hammon put that question at the center of Literature and Medicine, offered through the Paris Summer Program. Rice University undergraduates examined French literature in translation alongside foundational texts in the medical humanities, using the city itself as a primary source: Victor Hugo's home near the Place des Vosges, walking tours tracing women's contributions to French medicine and public life, and writing workshops held across Paris. The course reflects Rice Global's commitment to international experiences that carry full Rice credit and connect students with researchers, writers and thinkers on the ground. • In one month, three Rice undergraduates will begin orientation at Venice International University, marking the first time Rice students have studied at the consortium. VIU brings together 23 universities and research institutions from around the world on a shared campus on the island of San Servolo in the Venetian lagoon. Faculty from member institutions teach interdisciplinary courses to classrooms composed of students from across those same institutions, producing a comparative environment that few single-university programs can replicate. For Rice, membership offers students and faculty a distinct model of international engagement, one built on shared governance among peer institutions rather than a university-operated site. Rice's participation began this spring with anthropology professor Nia Georges, the first Rice faculty member to teach at VIU. This fall, Luis Campos, Baker College Associate Professor for History of Science, Technology and Innovation, teaches on San Servolo alongside the first cohort of Rice undergraduates. Orientation begins Sept. 6. Learn more about Rice's partnership with Venice International University: https://lnkd.in/g7i9GW2Q

Bonjour from Paris! Rice students spent the summer learning, exploring, and making memories in the City of Light. Through immersive experiences inside and outside the classroom, they gained a global perspective one day at a time. With flexible program lengths and a range of academic opportunities, studying in Paris can fit more students’ goals and schedules, making it easier to imagine a summer in which learning, discovery, and daily life become one unforgettable experience. 🇫🇷✨

  • #FrenchFriday 📚 Few cultural rhythms reveal as much about France as la rentrée. Translated simply as "the return," it marks the end of the August holiday period and the collective resumption of school, work and public life. The scale is what distinguishes it. Rather than a staggered return spread across weeks, much of the country restarts within the same few days, accompanied by its own established rituals, including the rentrée littéraire during which French publishers release several hundred new novels in a concentrated season. For students and faculty arriving from institutions where the academic year begins in isolation, la rentrée offers an early lesson in how French society organizes collective time, a small but revealing entry point into the culture they are about to spend a semester inside. The Paris Fall Semester Program cohort arrives Aug. 18. Learn more about the Rice Global Paris Center: https://lnkd.in/gMWvASZv

  • Five Rice University faculty members will teach at the Rice Global Paris Center this fall offering seven courses across biosciences, religion and political science. Natasha Kirienko, Janet Braam and Dereth Phillips lead Biochemistry I and Cell Biology, structured on accelerated seven-week schedules that allow students to complete both within one semester, an approach designed for undergraduates in the health professions or life sciences whose degree plans leave little room for a term abroad. Niki Kasumi Clements, Ph.D. offers Religion and the Art of Happiness alongside Demons, Mental Illness, and Medicine. Taylor Damann teaches Intro to International Relations and Gender and War. All courses carry Rice credit and satisfy D1, D2 or D3 distribution requirements. The academic program is built around what Paris makes possible. Co-curricular programming includes visits to the Imagine Institute for Genetic Diseases at Necker Children's Hospital, the Paris Brain Institute, the Musée Curie and the Musée de l'Histoire de la Médecine, along with the Assemblée nationale, UNESCO headquarters and the Grande Mosquée de Paris. Guest lectures and field-based collaborations bring in faculty from Université PSL and Université Paris-Saclay. Classes begin Aug. 24. • #TravelTuesday 🧳 Preparation is one of the least visible and most consequential parts of a semester abroad. Ahead of the Paris Fall Semester Program, Rice Global works with students on the practical groundwork that shapes the first weeks in a new country: understanding what furnished housing does and does not provide, planning for a four-month stay that spans two seasons, arranging prescription medications for the full term and thinking realistically about mobility in a city built on stairs and cobblestone. These details rarely appear in program descriptions, but they determine how quickly students settle in and how soon they can turn their attention to coursework. Preparation is what makes the academic experience possible. The fall cohort moves in Aug. 18. • Rice Global maintains a presence in three cities and each reflects a different model of international engagement. 🇫🇷 The Rice Global Paris Center is a university-owned facility in the Marais district, supporting undergraduate coursework, faculty research residencies and a calendar of conferences that convened 14 events in 2026 alone. 🇮🇳 Rice Global India, headquartered in Bengaluru, operates as a country office focused on research collaboration and institutional partnership, with formal agreements alongside the Indian Institute of Science, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras. 🇮🇹 In Venice, Rice participates as a member institution of Venice International University, a consortium of 23 universities and research institutions that share a campus on the island of San Servolo. Owning a center, staffing a country office and joining a consortium each solve a different problem. Together they give Rice students and faculty several distinct paths into international research and teaching rather than a single one. • Rice Global invites faculty from every school and discipline to submit expressions of interest for new faculty-led international programs in spring and summer 2027. Three models are under consideration: an international immersion during spring break integrated into an existing spring 2027 course, an approximately 10-day post-semester immersion that may carry 1 to 2 academic credits and a standalone 2 to 3 week, 3-credit faculty-led course in summer 2027. Programs are anticipated to enroll roughly 12 to 20 students with priority given to concepts that make substantive use of the international setting through fieldwork, research, site visits or engagement with local institutions and communities. At this stage Rice Global is seeking academic concepts rather than developed proposals. Faculty do not need a finalized itinerary, budget or international partner and prior experience in a destination is not required. Those with a compelling course idea and no location in mind can work with Rice Global to identify an appropriate one. Selected faculty receive comprehensive support spanning curriculum integration, itinerary and partner development, budgeting, student recruitment, pre-departure orientation, risk management and on-site logistics. Rice Global anticipates providing significant financial support, including faculty travel and substantial contribution toward student program costs. Expressions of interest are due Sept. 15, with notification anticipated by Oct. 1. Review the full call: https://lnkd.in/emdM7Rsg
