How does place shape innovation? On Aug. 14, Vice President of Real Estate Carolyn Coia will join leaders from academia and industry at North Carolina State University's ninth annual Doctoral Symposium on Design & Place-Based Innovation to explore that question. As RTP continues to evolve from a traditional research park into a more connected, mixed-use innovation community, placemaking has become an essential part of how we foster collaboration, attract talent and create spaces where innovation can thrive. Carolyn will share insights from RTP's ongoing evolution and discuss how thoughtful design can help create more connected, community-centered innovation ecosystems. We're honored to contribute to this important conversation alongside colleagues from N.C. State, Duke University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Elon University and other regional leaders advancing the future of design and innovation.

Interns are an important part of how we build RTP's talent pipeline. We've been grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Stephen Chen, Tatum Mellor and Aarthi Srinivasan this summer. Over the past few months, they partnered with teams at the Research Triangle Foundation, gaining hands-on experience through meaningful projects, mentorship and professional development. Thank you for your hard work, curiosity and fresh perspective. We can't wait to see all you accomplish in the years ahead! Nearly 70 years of legacy. 7,000 acres of opportunity. And a visionary 3.0 framework. In a landmark decision, Research Triangle Park companies and landowners gave unanimous approval to revolutionary new development standards. This milestone allows for the thoughtful addition of mixed-use and residential developments, evolving the single-use corporate campus into a dynamic regional destination. As we step into this next chapter, we’re excited to shape a space for even greater connection, value and growth for every business, neighbor, and innovator in our region. #ResearchTriangleRegion #RTP #SiteSelection #MixedUseDevelopment #TriangleNC

Foreign Direct Investment is contributing greatly to the explosive growth here in the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina. In the last 3 years alone, international firms have invested close to $7B in our region and created 3,500 new jobs for our residents. Over 700 companies from Europe, Asia, and around the world now call our region home, and they are continuing to invest here for many reasons, including: - 2% corporate tax rate (Corporate tax rate will be eliminated by 2030) - 3.99% flat individual income tax rate (projected to decrease to 3.49% in 2027) - Talent (NC invests heavily in education: over 50% of the $34B state budget goes to Ed) - Customized workforce training ($230M spent on biomanufacturing training alone) - Energy and industrial lease rates that are 30% lower than the national average - Proximity to customers (75% of the US population (250M) lives within a 1-day drive of NC) - International Connectivity (Daily non-stops to destinations including CDG, LHR, and FRA) Many of the above factors contributed greatly to North Carolina being voted by CNBC as the best state for business 3 out of the last 5 years. If your company is not here yet, now is the time to invest! #ResearchTriangle #NorthCarolina #Manufacturing #EconomicDevelopment #ForeignDirectInvestment #BusinessGrowth #SiteSelection #GlobalBusiness

Field Notes from North Carolina Spent a week in Research Triangle Park studying the genesis and evolution of one of the world’s most dynamic tech ecosystems outside superstar cities. The usual story is well known: three great universities (Duke, UNC and NC State) built the ecosystem. Plausible, but in my view, incomplete. Three takeaways from the field: 1. In research spinouts researchers must lead the new venture Research alone never creates firms as tech validation is hardly business validation. Universities can provide the ‘nest’, but building a new venture requires researchers to wear the entrepreneur’s hat. And that requires a cultural transition 2. Entrepreneurial genealogy matters more than spinouts The most successful ecosystems are built through generations of founders shaped by previous firms. Firms create founders and founders create firms. 3. Ecosystems start with talent density Ecosystems don’t start with startups but they emerge when talented people are attracted by top universities and cycle-relevant (contemporary) firms. Startups are an outcome of that density, not the starting point. Lots of meetings, lots of notes, and many stimulating conversations. Thanks to all the people who made this trip productive and rewarding Camilo Noriega Alvarez Scott Levitan Abha Bowers Jay Bigelow Jason Caplain Kelly Parsons CED (Center for Entrepreneurial Development) restor3d Time now to write up the book chapter Paul Ryan

What does it take to build workplaces and a region where people and businesses can thrive? It starts with leaders who are intentional about expanding opportunity, fostering belonging and creating pathways for economic mobility. That's why conversations like those at the Greater Raleigh Chamber’s Perspectives 2026: Strength in Every Stitch are so important. The Research Triangle Foundation of N.C. was proud to help plan, support and participate in this impactful gathering of Tapestry members and community leaders, which explored how workplace culture, business strategy and leadership can strengthen our workforce and economy. Foundation President and CEO Scott Levitan joined regional leaders Nicholas Allen, Veronica Bent and Ashton Fisher for the panel, "Leading with Opportunity: Threading Inclusion and Economic Mobility Through Business Strategy." Their conversation highlighted how intentional leadership, talent strategies and inclusive workplace practices can help organizations grow while strengthening the communities they serve. We’re grateful to Torri A. Staton, Ph.D., vice president of economic mobility and inclusivity at the Raleigh Chamber, for her leadership in advancing Tapestry, a strategic initiative focused on creating greater opportunity and prosperity across the Triangle. We also recognize the dedication of the Raleigh Chamber team and Perspectives task force members, including Foundation team members 📣 Kelly Propst, vice president of marketing and communications, and Ana Velez, marketing manager, who helped bring this event to life. Perspectives 2026 highlighted the power of intentional leadership, authentic partnership and environments where people can thrive. The Foundation remains committed to advancing these efforts as we work together to shape the future of Research Triangle Park and the broader Triangle region. Thank you to Dr. Staton, the Greater Raleigh Chamber, Tapestry members, speakers, sponsors and attendees for moving these important conversations forward and helping create a stronger region for all. #Perspectives2026 #ResearchTrianglePark #TriangleNC #Leadership #Innovation #WorkforceDevelopment #Community

Thank you, Chancellor Howell, for joining us to commemorate the adoption of RTP 3.0, and for representing the University of North Carolina System and our founding universities during this historic milestone. You left our attendees inspired to contribute to what's next!
The Research Triangle Park is exploring new mixed-use development opportunities — marking the culmination of five years of successful collaboration with companies, local universities, community partners and more. Chancellor Howell spoke at Hub RTP's RTP 3.0 event last week and highlighted the UNC System's long standing partnership with the space. "It was NC State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University that united around one vision, and that was to help create RTP," Chancellor Howell said. "RTP has helped keep that talent in the great state of North Carolina for generations." The RTP 3.0 plan supports new housing, retail, restaurants, hotels, greenways and entertainment options alongside its research and technology ecosystem.
