Nearly 100 HBS Foundry Bootcamp founders got a masterclass in building at the intersection of deep tech and national security. We hosted a fireside chat with two leaders who sit on opposite ends of the dual-use pipeline. One turns federally funded research into new ventures; the other builds and invests in companies that strengthen America's defense capabilities: Veronica Daigle, Partner & President of the National Security Practice at Red Cell Partners and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness. Red Cell has built 14 companies in five years across national security, cyber, and healthcare. Brian Hayt, Senior Director of NobleReach Foundation's Innovation Platform, translating mission-driven research into ventures, with roots at In-Q-Tel, DARPA's Embedded Entrepreneurship Initiative, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Moderated by our own Nick Maynes, the conversation got tactical fast: - A true dual-use company builds for both markets with intention, knowing the mission need, the end user, and the constraints. Not a commercial product lobbying its way into government. - SBIRs are underrated as a relationship engine: winning one buys you a customer conversation, not just a check. But know when to stop chasing grants and take dilutive capital that brings the right people. - An unexpected entry point into primes: their venture arms, which know the business units and can open doors no cold call will. - White space for 2026: integrated photonics, advanced materials for extreme environments, dual-use bio, and the unglamorous infrastructure behind the headline tech. Veronica's advice to founders: "Listen to the outcome your customer is trying to achieve. Don't focus so much on a particular product. Focus on the capability you're trying to deliver, and be adaptable." Brian's: "Get creative on the signals you use to demonstrate demand. Grants, BAAs, VC activity. Excited to share that I’ve joined Red Cell Partners as Vice President, BD & Strategy. After 27 years as a naval officer, serving alongside some of the most capable and dedicated people I’ll ever know, operationally, in the Pentagon, on the Hill, and at DIU — I’m stepping into this next chapter ready to keep building. Red Cell exists to move fast where it matters most: getting real capability into the hands of the people who protect our national security, without the friction that too often stands in the way. That mission is exactly why I’m here. I’m looking forward to working alongside a team that’s serious about closing the gap between what’s possible and what’s fielded — and doing it at the speed our warfighters actually need.
