About us
The Quantum Biomedical Sensing (Q-BIOMED) Research Hub – the UK's first quantum hub for biomedicine – aims to deliver a step change in earlier disease diagnosis and treatment for diseases including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Earlier diagnosis, through ultra-sensitive blood tests, faster MRI scan times, and improved access through lower costs and portable instruments, could offer a paradigm shift in healthcare. These advances could enable much earlier diagnosis of disease such as cancer allowing for more rapid medical interventions and potentially saving lives. Ultimately, this could translate to better patient outcomes and help to reduce waiting lists, easing pressures on the NHS. The Q-BIOMED Hub is part of a £160M network of five new Quantum Technology Research Hubs, set up as part of the UK National Quantum Technology Programme, to ensure the UK benefits from the potential of quantum technologies.

What’s so interesting about this conspiracy theory about an all-powerful government surveillance technology is that it was likely invented by the US government itself. When an American pilot was shot down in Southern Iran, the CIA announced that it had located him in the vast desert using a sinister new technology called ‘Ghost Murmur’. Numerous media outlets reported how Ghost Murmur used long-range quantum magnetometry to identify and locate the pilot’s heartbeat. “If your heart is beating, we will find you”, reported the NY Post. The problem with this technology is that scientists don’t believe it exists – “almost certainly not true” according to Scientific American. This is an interesting development for my work as a Co-Investigator on Q-BIOMED - The UK Quantum Biomedical Sensing Research Hub, which uses quantum technologies (like quantum magnetometry) to advance biomedical sensing. In my work with Q-Biomed, I’m interested in the new and emerging meanings that quantum sensing brings to our understanding of bodies, healthcare, and biotech, and how this relates to questions of ethics, responsibility, and public accountability. It matters if people believe that these advanced technologies, - which can resolve the human body down to the atomic level - can be used for powerful new forms of surveillance and control. It also matters that the source of the conspiracy is not some obscure forum in the depths of the internet but the director of the CIA. Ghost Murmur isn’t the first conspiracy theory that I’ve come across relating to quantum biomedicine. There is growing concern in tech conspiracy circles about quantum dots and their role in a mysterious disease called Morgellons (which scientists don’t believe exists). These conspiracies are obviously extreme examples of the ways that publics make sense of quantum technologies, but they speak to broader social anxieties about new healthcare innovations. This involves questions about the purposes of these technologies, who stands to benefit from them, who will own and control them, and who will be responsible if something goes wrong. Neuroscientist Gareth Barnes holds up a toy building block. This is how small the sensors need to be, he says. He called his own idea a pipe dream. With Wellcome funding, Gareth and physicist Matthew Brookes spent a decade turning that idea into a wearable brain scanner – one that children with epilepsy can actually move in. "I never imagined that this technology was possible," Gareth says. "I always thought it was a pipe dream." It was a pleasure to welcome MRC Deputy Chair Glenn Wells to the Hub at UCL today for a programme of talks and some great discussions on how we’re bringing quantum sensing into medicine. Our researchers shared work from across the Hub, from protein-based sensors to understand the mechanism of senescence, to magnetic relaxation thermometry for treating some types of cancer, to quantum-enhanced MRI and protein biomarkers for the early detection of disease. These are tools aimed at some of the hardest problems in medicine. We also talked about the translational gap, and the part the MRC can play in closing it. With its strength from discovery through to early clinical work, there’s a real chance to move these tools from bench to bedside with the right funding and support behind them. Thank you to Glenn Wells and his team for taking the time to visit. And thank you to our researchers from the universities of Heriott-Watt, Warwick, Oxford and Cambridge who travelled to UCL to share their work. We’re looking forward to what comes next. We're delighted that researchers from Q-BIOMED and affiliated institutions have secured funding for nine projects through the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) i4i FAST Quantum Technology programme, supporting the early-stage development of innovations with the potential to benefit patients and the NHS. The funded projects span a remarkable range of healthcare challenges, including: - New quantum-enabled MRI techniques that could help clinicians better distinguish aggressive from slow-growing prostate cancer. - Quantum sensing tools designed to help identify the most effective biologic therapies for people with rheumatoid arthritis. - Portable quantum-enabled eye imaging systems that could enable children with serious eye conditions to be monitored closer to home. - Next-generation nanodiamond diagnostic technologies aimed at delivering ultra-sensitive tests in community healthcare settings. - Wearable quantum sensing technologies to detect the earliest brain changes associated with Alzheimer's disease and improve sleep monitoring for people living with epilepsy. These projects represent an important step towards Q-BIOMED's mission of bringing quantum technologies closer to healthcare applications that could improve diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes. Our co-investigator Cristian Bonato is seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates to join their team's work on the development and deployment of real-time autonomous optimisation of nuclear spin sensing and control. The two positions are intended to complement each other and will work closely together at the interface of machine learning and quantum technology: - Computational Postdoctoral Research Associate (background in AI, machine learning, applied mathematics, computer science, or theoretical physics), will develop algorithms based on Bayesian experimental design, variational Bayesian inference, and reinforcement learning to enable autonomous detection and control of individual nuclear spins. - Experimental Postdoctoral Research Associate (background in experimental quantum technologies; experience with NV centres in diamond or other colour centres is particularly desirable), will further develop our real-time adaptive quantum sensing platform and lead experimental demonstrations of AI-driven quantum control for nuclear-spin quantum technology. Both positions will be based at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, offering a collaborative and internationally connected research environment in both quantum technology and AI, and the successful candidates will work closely with partners across the quantum technology hubs, including the Q-BIOMED. 🚨 Job opportunity Professor John Morton’s group at the London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL is currently hiring for a Research Fellow in Quantum Biomedical Sensors. The post holder will develop quantum sensors based on optically readable spin defects such as nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond and related colour centres and engineer these into biocompatible quantum sensor platforms suitable for in-vivo biomedical sensing applications. The role will combine computational modelling of magnetic field distributions and sensor performance, materials and device engineering (spin defect characterisation, optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), sensor packaging and biocompatibility) with applied translational work, in close collaboration with clinicians and biomedical scientists within the Q-BIOMED Hub, to take quantum sensing concepts from the laboratory towards real-world, in-vivo diagnostic use.
