The power problem in AI data centers starts long before electricity reaches the GPU. From the grid to the rack, power architectures are being redesigned as the industry looks toward 800 V high-voltage DC to move enormous amounts of power more efficiently. One technology gaining momentum is the solid-state transformer (SST). By converting medium-voltage AC directly to DC, SSTs can eliminate conversion stages, improve efficiency and simplify the power architecture behind next-generation AI facilities. Making that shift possible will require a new generation of high-voltage power semiconductors, particularly silicon carbide (SiC) devices built to handle higher voltages with lower switching losses and fewer components. In our latest LinkedIn article, we explore how SSTs could reshape AI data center power delivery, why high-voltage SiC is critical to the transition and where onsemi technologies fit into this emerging architecture. Read the full article to see how the power infrastructure behind AI is evolving. 👇

AI racks, robots and industrial systems are all asking the same thing from power electronics: deliver more power without taking up more space.    GaNEXUS™, onsemi’s gallium nitride (GaN) power portfolio, is built for that challenge.    With faster switching, lower switching losses and higher power density than conventional silicon solutions, GaNEXUS helps engineers rethink power architectures for demanding applications including AI data centers, robotics, industrial automation and energy infrastructure.    The portfolio spans 40V to 650V GaN FETs, along with 650V GaNEXUS Smart devices that integrate protection features to simplify system design and improve reliability.    Combined with onsemi silicon and EliteSiC technologies, GaNEXUS gives engineers more options to optimize efficiency, thermal performance, system size and cost across the power-delivery chain.    As the demand for power keeps growing, the technology delivering it has to keep evolving too.    Learn more about GaNEXUS and the future of intelligent power: https://www.onsemi.com/GaN

Did you know some of the most important signals in a modern vehicles can be measured in just a few millivolts?! ⚡️🔍    Pressure and force sensors are constantly feeding data into automotive systems that manage braking, EV battery cooling and occupant detection. Some of those signals measure as little as 6 mV, yet they still have to stay accurate through electrical noise, temperature swings and other harsh conditions.    That’s the job of the onsemi NCV7192.    It powers the sensor, amplifies and filters the signal, compensates for temperature effects and catches sensor faults in a single device. Engineers get a simpler design with fewer external components while maintaining overall accuracy of 0.25% or better.    It’s a lot of work for a very small signal.    Download our latest white paper to see what it takes to turn pressure and force sensor outputs into data the system can trust. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/gad72ywa

Can using less power actually help a drone see better? 👀 Yes. And the reason comes down to heat. Drones pack motors, processors, sensors and other electronics into a tight, power-constrained space. As onsemi’s Stephen Harris explains, the temperature of an image sensor can directly affect its performance. Lower-power sensors generate less heat, which can ultimately help improve image quality. In a new interview with Future Electronics, Steve explores what engineers need to consider when designing the next generation of drone vision systems, from power and dynamic range to global shutter, sensor fusion and edge processing. Watch the full conversation to learn how advancements in imaging technology are helping drones see and navigate the world around them. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gY_fnMvj

How many times does electricity change before it reaches an AI processor? More than most people realize. ⚡ Before a GPU can process a single token, electricity has already been converted, regulated and stabilized multiple times as it moves from the grid through the data center and into the server. Power semiconductors are working at every stage of that journey, making sure the right amount of power reaches the right place in the right form, while minimizing energy lost as heat. As AI infrastructure grows, that job is becoming increasingly important. So, what exactly are power semiconductors, how do technologies like SiC and GaN improve efficiency and why does the shift toward 800V DC matter? We break it down in our latest article. 👇

What happens when you replace a robot’s wheels with propellers? You get a robot that flies. 🤖🚁 Underneath the surface, drones and autonomous mobile robots share many of the same building blocks: lithium-ion batteries, brushless DC motors, power conversion, processors and sensing technologies that help them understand and move through the world around them. The difference is that a drone has to do it all while staying in the air, putting even greater demands on efficiency, weight and sensing. onsemi helps engineers tackle both sides of the challenge. Intelligent power technologies improve efficiency and motor control, while sensing solutions help drones see, navigate, measure distance and maintain precise control in flight. Download our free Intelligent Power and Sensing Solutions for Drones tutorial to explore how power, motor control, imaging, sensing and connectivity come together inside a modern autonomous drone. See how these technologies work across the system and how many of the same building blocks are helping shape the next generation of robotics: https://lnkd.in/d4DEmWQy

What happens when silicon hits its limits in high-density power design? As efficiency demands rise and switching speeds climb, traditional MOSFETs and IGBTs are being pushed beyond their comfort zone — especially in data centers, renewable energy and advanced power conversion. SiC JFETs change the equation: 🔹 Lower conduction losses + ultra-low RDS(on) for higher efficiency and power density 🔹 Faster switching speeds to shrink magnetics and improve system performance 🔹 Reliable operation under extreme conditions where silicon begins to break down If you’re designing next-gen power systems, this is where wide bandgap moves from "nice to have" to necessary. 👉 Download the whitepaper: https://bit.ly/4oH8bBc onsemi #PowerElectronics #SiC #Engineering #onsemi #Avnet
