More than a decade ago, a physician at NYU Langone Health, Katherine Hochman, started a book club with only a dozen colleagues. It's grown into a community of 500+ employees across the system who come together to discuss stories that challenge assumptions, deepen empathy, and strengthen human connection. Stories have the power to make us better colleagues and help us see people with fresh eyes. At NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, nurses are turning their frontline experience into meaningful improvements in patient care and safety through a nurse-led council. NYU Langone Health’s nursing councils are groups of frontline nurses that meet regularly to identify care challenges, share ideas, and work with hospital leadership to develop and implement solutions. Through this shared governance model, nurses have a formal voice in decisions affecting clinical practice, workflows, education, safety, and patient outcomes. The nurse-led Quality and Safety Council at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn recently expanded education and training to help prevent pressure injuries, also known as bedsores. By improving how repositioning devices and specialty low-air-loss mattresses are used, nurses have helped reduce pressure injuries by 26 percent since 2025. Nurses in Brooklyn have also strengthened fall prevention by appointing fall champions on every unit, leading scenario-based training, and improving how they speak with patients about asking for help, including when using the bathroom. “These councils are essential to continuous quality improvement, and the nurse-hospital leadership relationship is fundamental to making meaningful change in patient outcomes,” says Stephanie A. Nolan, DNP, MBA, vice president of nursing and patient care services at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. By bringing nurses’ ideas from the bedside into practice, nursing councils are helping improve workflows, strengthen patient education, and deliver safer care across the hospital.
