Helping children and youth do better today so that they can thrive tomorrow.
About us
"We help children and their families do better today, so that we all do better tomorrow." Founded in 1853, our mission at Northern Children's Services is to support the healthy development of children, while stabilizing their families to build stronger communities. Everything we do at Northern Children’s Services is designed to ensure a more promising future for children and is driven by our belief that every child possesses inherent value, potential, and the ability to transform him or herself – regardless of his or her background or life circumstances. If we invest in that potential through child welfare and behavioral health services that emphasize safety, health, permanency, self-sufficiency and positive relationships, then the children will lead happier, healthier, and more productive lives and contribute to society in meaningful ways. Learn more about what we do at Northern Children's Services by visiting www.northernchildren.org.

Today marks the final day of Northern’s Wellness Summer Camp! 💛 As we wrap up eight weeks together, we’re reflecting on a summer filled with skill-building, enrichment, recreation, relationship-building, and plenty of fun. For many children, summer months can mean a significant gap in the supports they receive during the school year. Wellness provides a safe, structured environment where children can stay engaged and connected while continuing to build the social-emotional and behavioral skills that help them thrive at home, at school, and in their communities. We are incredibly grateful to the dedicated staff, community partners, volunteers, and caregivers who helped make this summer possible—and to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) for its investment in this important work. Most of all, congratulations to our Wellness kiddos on a wonderful summer! We are so proud of all you accomplished. 💛 #NorthernChildrensServices #SummerWellness #BehavioralHealth #YouthMentalHealth #PCCD #Philadelphia

We were honored to welcome State Senator Vincent Hughes to Northern for a special afternoon with children and youth from our Wellness Summer Camp and Youth Promoting Peace Program (YP3). During his visit, Senator Hughes answered questions and spoke about service, leadership, and the importance of making your voice heard. He reminded our young people that good leadership begins with service and encouraged them to speak up about the needs of their communities and share their perspectives with elected leaders. Even before they are old enough to vote, their voices matter. The conversation continued over an ice cream social 🍦, and our young people had a few surprises to share, including a special thank-you illustration and an original portrait of Senator Hughes drawn by talented YP3 artist Hamzah. 🎨 We were also proud to share the impact of programs made possible through public and philanthropic partnership. YP3 is supported by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency's Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) initiative and the HAMILTON FAMILY CHARITABLE TRUST, while our Wellness Summer Camp also receives PCCD VIP support. Thank you, Senator Hughes, for encouraging our young people to use their voices, lead through service, and recognize the important role they can play in their communities. #NorthernChildrensServices #YouthLeadership #YouthVoice #Philadelphia #PCCD

On August 3, Northern Children’s Services brought together 20 Wellness Summer Camp participants and Youth Promoting Peace Program (YP3) students for Phase 1 of a collaborative Mural Art Project. Through painting pre-designed canvas pieces, young people practiced creativity, self-expression, teamwork, patience, and problem-solving while building meaningful connections with one another. The mural will ultimately serve as a reflection of the collective creativity, unity, and sense of community created throughout the project. It was so much fun to get these two summer programs together. The session concluded with music and a game of Silent Ball, providing another opportunity for participants to strengthen communication, focus, and positive social connections in a fun and supportive environment. We look forward to seeing the project continue to develop in future phases and sharing the completed mural with our community. We are thankful for the public and philanthropic partnerships of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and HAMILTON FAMILY CHARITABLE TRUST, who help make these programs possible.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Philadelphia Police 5th District for partnering with community initiatives and including Roxborough Memorial Hospital in supporting the Northern Children’s Services Back to School Drive. Our hospital came together to contribute a variety of essential school supplies, such as backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, glue sticks, scissors, and more, ensuring that children in need are well-prepared for the upcoming school year. We would also like to thank everyone who donated to this wonderful cause; your generosity plays a vital role in making a positive impact on the lives of the children at Northern Children’s Services. Creating meaningful experiences goes beyond activities—it’s about building community. This week, our Wellness Summer Camp celebrated two staff birthdays and enjoyed a festive Fourth of July gathering with hot dogs, games, and time together. These moments help foster connection, belonging, and positive memories for the young people we serve throughout the summer.
