When Mike Zambardino needed a kidney transplant, his wife, Tatiana Lampa volunteered to be his living donor. In May 2024, the couple underwent successful transplant surgery at #NYPWeillCornell, where Dr. Joseph Del Pizzo performed Tatiana's donor surgery and Dr. Dustin Carpenter performed Mike’s kidney transplant. “For Mike and all our transplant patients, our goal is for you to be able to get back to your life as it was and as you hoped it to be," said Dr. Carpenter. Less than two years later, the couple is thrilled to be expecting their first child. Dr. Zev Williams, chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia, recently discussed with The New York Times how the Sperm Track and Recovery (STAR) system uses artificial intelligence to find sperm in samples from men with azoospermia, a cause of male infertility. Developed at the Columbia University Fertility Center, STAR can detect in an hour a trace amount of sperm that could take humans several days to find, ushering in new possibilities for people with fertility challenges. Earlier use of Lu-PSMA-617, a targeted therapy used to kill cancer cells, can delay the progression of metastatic prostate cancer when administered as part of a trio of drugs, according to a phase 3 clinical trial led by Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and investigators from several other institutions worldwide. The study’s results, published in The Lancet, could change the standard of care for many patients with prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-positive metastatic prostate cancer. Along with ongoing analyses, these results led the FDA to approve early use of Lu-PSMA-617 for PSMA-positive metastatic prostate cancer in late July. On a recent episode of the #AdvancesInCare podcast, one of the leaders of the study, #NYPWeillCornell oncologist Dr. Scott Tagawa discussed the challenges of treating the disease and how this research may extend survival and improve patients’ quality of life. Keeping donor lungs in a controlled hypothermic organ preservation unit at 10 degrees Celsius — a temperature previously shown to extend donor lung preservation time — has no negative impact on patient outcomes when compared with ice preservation, according to research led by Dr. Frank D'Ovidio, lung transplant and thoracic surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia. The longer preservation time allows for operational efficiencies that give patients more advance notice and transplant teams more time to prepare for surgery. In February 2025, at 11 years old, Leni was diagnosed with scoliosis after her pediatrician noticed a curvature in her spine and referred her and her family to #NYPOchSpine. Imaging showed her spinal curve measured 40 degrees. She was prescribed a brace and physical therapy to help prevent the curve from worsening, but wearing a brace 14 hours a day took an emotional toll. “It affected my confidence and made me feel anxious knowing people might ask me about the brace,” Leni shared. Despite bracing, Leni’s curve progressed to 53 degrees by June 2025. That’s when she met Dr. Michael Vitale, a pediatric spine surgeon with #NYPOchSpine. In August 2025, she underwent spinal fusion surgery using rods and screws to help straighten and stabilize her spine. The surgery was a success. As part of #NYPOchSpine’s multidisciplinary approach to scoliosis care, Leni and her family were connected with our Scoliosis and Youth Mental Health program, which provides a therapist and other resources, tailored to teens navigating treatment. “Nearly half of the teenagers we see experience mental health challenges,” Dr. Vitale shared. “This can affect everything from brace wear and physical therapy to recovery after surgery.” “Having that support was amazing,” Leni’s mom Amanda shared. “For kids going through this, it’s absolutely necessary.” At #NYPOchSpine, experts from across specialties worked together to support Leni from diagnosis through recovery, developing a personalized treatment plan tailored to her needs. Now 13, Leni is back to doing what she loves, including dancing and skiing, and she recently attended her first music festival.
