AI has real potential to improve digital access and independence for people with disabilities. Realizing that potential requires careful attention to how AI systems are designed, trained, tested, and governed. A new report from the New York City Bar Association’s Presidential Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies examines disability representation, accessibility, bias, data, and the risks of relying on AI systems that are designed around an assumed “average” user. The report also considers practical measures, including disability-inclusive design and testing, accessibility benchmarks, representative data, human alternatives, transparency, and stronger safeguards. For accessibility professionals, it offers an important perspective on what responsible AI needs to account for when disability is part of the user experience.
