OpenAI's new play for enterprise AI agents: fewer dashboards, more engineers OpenAI just launched Presence, a managed way to deploy AI agents in the enterprise, led by OpenAI's own engineers rather than sold self-serve. How it works: each engagement starts with one specific job (billing disputes, insurance claims, IT requests). The agent gets only the access that job needs, the customer sets the rules for escalation, and rollout runs through security review, simulation testing, and staged launch before go-live. Why it matters: Gartner predicts 40%+ of agentic AI projects will be scrapped by 2027 not from bad models, but weak governance. Presence is a direct answer to that: heavy on guardrails and audit trails, light on "plug and play." The catch: access is gated by OpenAI's "delivery capacity" meaning engineers, not servers, are the bottleneck. And with OpenAI as both model vendor and implementation partner, accountability for what goes wrong needs to be spelled out in the contract, not assumed. Early customers (BBVA, SoftBank, IAG) are still in pilot/design-partner mode so "battle-tested" rests mostly on OpenAI's own internal support line data for now. A signal of where enterprise AI is headed: less dashboard, more consulting engagement.
