💡 We mapped out how to opt out of AI training on major platforms. Many had it on by default. LinkedIn, for example, can use your posts, profile, and comments to train content-generating AI models. Most especially, the setting is on by default. The catch: opting out only applies going forward. Most platforms use your content or activity for AI training by default unless you opt out or object. They're building the threat and selling the shield. On 27 August, OpenAI published a joint cybersecurity letter co-signed by Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, AWS, Oracle, and dozens more. The concerns raised are legitimate: AI will enable more sophisticated attacks, critical infrastructure is exposed, and under-resourced defenders need better tools and funding. What's absent is any commitment to capability restraint. The organisations co-signing this letter are the same ones setting the pace of AI development. What's more: their proposed solution is to adopt their own defensive AI tools. That's not necessarily cynical (almost), but it's also not accountability. "Zero-knowledge encryption" is becoming a marketing term in cloud storage. Here's what it actually means: your files are encrypted using keys generated on your own device, and the provider never holds those keys in a form it can use. Everything else is a variation of scope. And scope is where most claims quietly narrow. Dropbox applies zero-knowledge encryption only to designated folders on Business Plus, Advanced and Enterprise plans. pCloud limits it to a paid add-on covering one folder. One thing that comes up constantly for freelancers, agencies, and HR teams: how do you securely collect files from people who don't have an account on your storage platform? MEGA's File request feature solves this directly. Will you hand over your facial biometric data to get 'verified' on Facebook? Last week, Meta launched a free verified badge for Facebook personal accounts. You submit a selfie video and they cross-check it against your profile photos. Unfortunately, the announcement doesn't say where that video is stored or what Meta does with it after verification. What we do know: Meta is currently paying $650 million in Illinois and $1.4 billion in Texas for collecting facial biometric data without permission. Back in March, Google quietly changed the default free storage for new accounts, from 15 GB to 5 GB, with the remaining 10 GB now gated behind phone number verification. It's a small policy change, but worth sitting with: Google gave away 15 GB free for 13 years, and that same allowance is now a reward for a piece of your data instead of a default. We used this shift as the starting point to properly compare free cloud storage tiers in 2026, not just on space, but on a criterion most comparisons skip: privacy. MEGA still gives 20 GB free on sign-up, no phone number required (And yes, we used to give 50 GB, for our early users who remember).
