When a client needed to break ground on a major project in six months, LHB didn’t flinch. The project design, for an industrial expansion in Duluth, didn’t need to be complete in six months. It just had to be far enough along that construction could begin before winter arrived. From a design perspective, that meant our team had to get creative. First, we identified the foundational decisions that had to be made before breaking ground—and got the client to commit to the constraints. Second, we had to bring city officials into the conversation early, so there would be no surprises when it came to regulatory checkpoints. And finally, we had to release work in stages, with a clear view of the end product as we handed off tasks to our partners. Did we make the deadline? We recently added two new players to the LHB team: Allison L. Gredesky (she/her/hers) has stepped into the role of human resources director, and Kent Fichtner has been named as IT director. Both are based in our Minneapolis office. Allison previously served as director of people and culture at the Minnesota Children’s Museum in St. Paul and was trained as an executive coach at the Center for Coaching in Organizations. Kent, a Mankato native, has been fascinated by computers all his life and has more than two decades of experience working in IT for Minnesota companies. Join us in welcoming Allison and Kent to LHB! #lhbstories #architecture #engineering #people

Three outstanding LHB projects got some love at the 2026 Finance & Commerce Top Projects celebration last week! The recognized work included designs for Ramsey County Environmental Service Center, in Roseville; Inver Hills Community College Technology and Business Building Renovation, an education project; and Kyle Garden Square, which provides supportive housing for adults who have experienced homelessness. #lhbstories #architecture #engineering

Declining enrollment leaves many school districts with a problem: too much building and not enough students. Across Minnesota and Wisconsin, some districts are turning that extra square footage into something the community actually needs, including childcare and early learning centers. But that kind of transformation takes expertise to get it done right. Licensure requirements shape everything from sink placement to classroom size. Secured entrances, sound control, and age-specific design all come into play too. LHB has worked with several districts on these conversions, including a middle school turned childcare center and a before/after-school program expanded into a full early learning facility. See how these projects came together and what other districts can learn from them, check out this post at LHB Insights. Link in comments. #lhbstories #architecture #engineering #preK12 #schools

Designing for Minnesota's extremes requires more than durability — it requires balance. We're proud to see Carleton College's 11 Phius-certified townhouses featured by Passive House Accelerator. This project represents decades of collaboration between LHB and Carleton College and demonstrates how high-performance buildings can thrive in one of the country's most challenging climates. Located in Northfield, Minnesota, these all-electric student residences were designed to perform through subzero winters and hot, humid summers while supporting Carleton's ambitious sustainability goals. Through careful energy modeling, solar tuning, high-performance envelopes, and integration with the college's geothermal energy system, the project delivers exceptional comfort, resilience, and efficiency. Perhaps most importantly, the townhouses were designed to feel like home — creating spaces that foster community, connection, and student well-being. Thank you to Carleton College and the exceptional project team for helping bring this vision to life. Most clients know they want a high-performance building. But few can say what that actually means, until someone asks the right questions. At LHB, we use a proprietary tool called Thrive to help clients define their own performance goals across six areas: Ecosystems, Climate, Resources, Well-Being, Community, and Prosperity. There are no pre-set benchmarks, no third-party certification requirements. Clients set the bar, and Thrive keeps the whole team accountable, especially when budget pressures make it tempting to abandon your performance goals and cut corners on a project. Curious how this works alongside frameworks like LEED or Minnesota's B3 guidelines? Read how Thrive gives clients a real voice in shaping their buildings, from concept through construction. Pitching in to solve problems and make improvements is a trait that’s baked into our DNA as a professional services firm. But our desire to be helpful goes beyond simply meeting our clients’ needs. Our staff thrives on community involvement, from joining the boards of community organizations to funding scholarship opportunities to participating in highway cleanup projects. On July 14, in honor of LHB’s 60th birthday, we’re planning to send 60 staffers to help pack food at Second Harvest Heartland in Minneapolis and Second Harvest Northland in Duluth. From our point of view, it’s not only a great way to make sure that people in need of food can get the resources they need, it’s also a wonderful way to boost connections among our staff and strengthen their ties to the community. Service is our job, of course, but it’s also something we love to do. #lhbstories #architecture #engineering #construction
