AI can sound confident and compassionate—and still give dangerously incomplete medical advice. USC Viterbi School of Engineering researchers Marjorie Freedman and Jon May are developing ALICE, a new system designed to test whether chatbot answers are accurate, complete and safe to act on. Freedman is a principal scientist and associate director of the AI Division at the USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI). May is director of ISI’s AI Division and a research associate professor in the USC Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science. Their goal: uncover the errors and missing warnings that polished AI responses can hide—and help determine which chatbots deserve our trust. I just wrapped up my summer internship at USC’s Information Sciences Institute, where I worked on SPHERE Research Infrastructure, a national testbed for reproducible cybersecurity experimentation. My role involved taking published research artifacts from venues including IEEE S&P, USENIX Security, ACSAC, NDSS, and PETS and getting them running on SPHERE so that other researchers could redeploy and verify them. It sounds straightforward. It is not. What I did not expect was that the hardest failures would be the quiet ones: scripts that report success while producing empty output files, a locale setting that silently corrupts results, or a configuration path with the wrong quotation marks that fills a disk without warning until the build fails 40 minutes later. Almost nothing announced itself as broken. Another major lesson was that testing on the machine you built on proves very little. A development node accumulates state that your installation script never had to earn. The real test is deploying on a fresh node from scratch, and that exposed gaps every single time. Reproducibility is often discussed as a research virtue. Up close, it is mostly unglamorous debugging, careful documentation, and being honest when something does not reproduce, then clearly documenting why. And thank you to my fellow interns, Allison Lu, Yizhu Wen, Prathyush Turaga, and Sonali Singh, for making a summer full of stack traces genuinely fun.

A great summer of research, collaboration, and discovery at USC Information Sciences Institute! As part of ISI, the SPHERE Research Infrastructure team welcomed students for the 2026 Summer Internship Program, giving 23 interns the opportunity to contribute to hands-on research in cybersecurity and privacy. This summer, interns worked on projects spanning IoT and industrial control systems, experiment automation, reusable research artifacts, and the software and operations that power the SPHERE testbed. Their work is helping strengthen SPHERE as a research infrastructure for the broader cybersecurity and privacy community. Congratulations to all of the interns on an impressive summer of research—and thank you to the SPHERE mentors and teams who helped make the experience possible. That’s a wrap on the 2026 SPHERE summer internship program! This year, 23 interns worked with SPHERE, including 18 students onsite with our teams at USC Information Sciences Institute, Northeastern University, and the University of Utah, and five virtual interns. Over the summer, they made real contributions to SPHERE, working on projects ranging from IoT and industrial control systems to experiment automation, reusable research artifacts, and the software and operations that keep the testbed running. They capped off the summer by presenting their work at our 2026 SPHERE Intern Showcase. We’re grateful to all of our interns for their hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm, and to the SPHERE team members who mentored them throughout the summer. We wish them all the best in their studies, research, and whatever comes next! Quantum computing is moving from theory toward the clinic. Amir Kalev—lead quantum scientist at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering's USC Information Sciences Institute and adjunct research professor at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences—has helped develop a hybrid quantum-AI system that outperformed a classical model by roughly 7%, using about one-sixth the parameters. $10 million to help USC engineers become founders 👏 That's the gift VIZIO founder William Wang (B.S. EE '86) and his wife, Sakura, just made to TIE Hub - USC Viterbi — one of the largest gifts ever made to an engineering school's entrepreneurship program in the U.S. The gift launches the William W. Wang Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub, building on a program that already supports 70+ student ventures a year, with just two full-time staff.
