  • The Reserve Bank of India on Friday (April 24) cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank Limited, citing continued regulatory violations more than two years after imposing business restrictions. The RBI said the action follows non-compliance with norms, including issues related to customer due diligence, fund usage, and technology infrastructure. The central bank had earlier directed the payments bank to stop accepting fresh deposits in January 2024. While the bank remains operational in a limited capacity, it can now only process withdrawals of existing deposits and facilitate loan referrals through banking correspondents, and cannot accept new deposits. • The Supreme Court has allowed a 15-year-old girl to terminate her seven-month pregnancy, holding that a woman’s reproductive autonomy must be respected, even beyond the statutory limit under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. A Bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said the interest of the woman would outweigh that of the unborn foetus, and rejected the argument that she could be compelled to continue the pregnancy and give the child up for adoption. The Court also noted the psychological trauma faced by the minor, observing that forcing her to continue the pregnancy could have serious consequences on her mental health, development, and future prospects. • A woman in Bengaluru has been arrested for allegedly killing her boyfriend. According to investigators, the accused lured the victim to a house with the promise of a “western-style proposal”, before allegedly restraining him and setting him on fire. The two, colleagues at a private telecom firm, had been in a relationship for nearly two years, with police pointing to recent tensions as a possible trigger and shows clear signs of premeditation. Police sources said the accused had planned the crime over several days, watching online videos and purchasing items such as a belt and handcuffs. After the incident, she allegedly attempted to destroy evidence and initially claimed it was a case of suicide, a version ruled out by forensic findings. • The Opposition on Friday (April 24) submitted a fresh notice in the Rajya Sabha seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, listing nine charges of “proven misbehaviour” and backed by 73 MPs from multiple parties. According to sources, the new notice includes “fresh grounds”, detailing specific instances of alleged misconduct by the CEC. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said the charges relate to acts and omissions committed after March 15, 2026, and described Kumar’s continuation in office as a matter of concern. Among the allegations cited are partisan enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, including inaction over a complaint against the Prime Minister’s April 18 address, and a controversial social media post by the Election Commission targeting a political party. Other charges include administrative lapses, alleged institutional proximity to the ruling party, and claims of mass voter deletions in West Bengal.
