💡HRL demonstrates a silicon quantum processor that runs itself. The quantum processing unit integrates its control hardware inside the cryostat and autonomously runs error correction. Published today in Nature. According to CEO Roberto (Rob) Vasquez: “Our goal is to build powerful quantum computers using standard microchip production lines and house each machine inside a single refrigerator. This approach will keep production costs low and make the technology affordable enough to tackle a much wider variety of business and scientific problems." IBM has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, LLC. (https://lnkd.in/eAfugJB3) For decades, IBM Research has believed that leadership in quantum computing comes from solving the hardest scientific and engineering challenges at scale. That philosophy has guided our work from the earliest superconducting quantum processors to the roadmap we are executing today toward large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing with Starling and beyond. The HRL team brings deep expertise in silicon-spin qubits, quantum materials, quantum sensing, and the foundational technologies that underpin advanced quantum systems. Superconducting and silicon-spin qubits share many of the same engineering foundations, including advanced silicon fabrication, cryogenics, control electronics, packaging, and interconnects. Combining expertise across these disciplines creates new opportunities to deepen our understanding of how quantum technologies can be built, optimized, and scaled over the coming decades. IBM continues to lead the industry through advances in superconducting qubits, error correction, quantum software, systems engineering, and a clear path to scaled quantum computing. The opportunity here is to build on that leadership by bringing additional scientific and technical capabilities into an already strong portfolio. 💡HRL recently published new research in IOP Publishing’s Quantum Science and Technology on a novel, low-leak-rate micro-knife bonding approach that can greatly enhance the prospects and reliability of practical quantum sensors, atomic clocks and quantum information technologies. Titled “Wafer-scale micro-knife sealed vacuum cells for quantum devices,” this paper outlines an approach that enables the realization of both atomic vapor cells and more complex evacuated atomic beam devices.
