    Alibaba’s open-source AI model Qwen has reportedly surpassed 3 billion downloads worldwide over the past six months, overtaking Meta and Google on Hugging Face, according to an August 14 report from the open-source platform. Google’s open models recorded 418 million downloads, while Meta’s reached 227 million during the same period. Qwen’s total was therefore several times higher than either competitor. According to the Qwen team, Alibaba has open-sourced more than 460 models through the Qwen family, while derivative models built on top of them now exceed 300,000. Hugging Face described Qwen as “one of the largest foundations of the open AI ecosystem.” The trend extends beyond downloads. The report says China’s largest open models released in almost every month of 2026 were larger than those released by U.S. labs. China’s monthly ceiling ranged from 754 billion to 2.78 trillion parameters, while America’s ceiling stayed below 130 billion in five of the seven months covered. Other Chinese AI companies are also expanding. Moonshot AI has fully open-sourced Kimi K3, which has 2.8 trillion total parameters, while DeepSeek and Zhipu AI have released new open models and tools. For businesses, Qwen’s growth matters because open-weight models can be downloaded, fine-tuned and adapted into new AI products, potentially giving developers more flexibility while increasing competition and reducing costs. Kaufmyn argued that her actions were necessary because she believed advanced AI could pose an existential threat. The jury rejected that defense, and San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said the verdict sent a message that protesters cannot endanger public safety as a means to an end. The case comes as concerns about AI safety are becoming more prominent. More than 1,000 researchers at frontier AI labs signed a letter this summer warning of a “real risk” that AI development could accelerate beyond humanity’s ability to understand or control the resulting systems. AI safety professor Stuart Russell also testified in Kaufmyn’s defense, arguing that further development should require rigorous safety guarantees.   • A custom Unitree G1 robot is crawling across the ground using an AI-powered locomotion system called the Crawl Policy, producing movement that looks more like a creature than a conventional machine. Engineer Logan Olson modified the G1 so the system could learn how to move by optimizing for speed, stability and efficiency. Instead of copying the way humans crawl, the AI searches for movement strategies that meet those objectives. The result is a jerky and highly unconventional crawling motion that looks unusual but is designed around the robot's physical capabilities. The demonstration highlights an important idea in robot learning: efficient movement does not necessarily have to resemble human movement. What appears strange from a human perspective can represent a solution that works well for a machine with different joints, balance constraints and physical mechanics. For robotics, this approach could have implications beyond crawling. AI-generated locomotion may allow robots to discover movement strategies that engineers would not necessarily design by hand. As robots become more capable of learning physical skills, their movements may become less human-like and more optimized for what machines can actually do. The company says the experiment is intended to explore whether AI-guided sexual wellness could reduce stress, improve sleep, boost mood and confidence, and potentially help address male loneliness. The participants were paid $2,000 per month for taking part. Joi AI reportedly received more than 150,000 applications for the positions, making the experiment an unusual example of how quickly consumer AI products can attract public interest. The company had also surveyed 2,500 adults before launching the study and found that 43% said they engage in sexual self-care before a major event, such as a date, exam or difficult conversation. However, the study's methodology raises questions. WIRED reports that the research involved only 10 participants, relied on self-reported results and did not include a control group, meaning the findings cannot establish that the AI experience itself caused any reported improvements. The bigger business question is whether AI companions are developing into a legitimate wellness category or simply creating new ways to monetize loneliness and intimacy.   • Bengaluru engineer Gaurav Sen built an AI-powered system that can detect potholes, pinpoint their exact locations and identify the contractor responsible for the road. The system uses a dashcam, GPS and an accelerometer installed in Sen’s car. AI vision models then analyze the footage to identify potholes of different sizes, including defects that can be difficult to distinguish from speed breakers. Sen said he used Codex to build the app, which records the relevant data and sends it to OpenAI. The more unusual part comes next. The app was modified to analyze 2,900 government contracts and identify which contractor is responsible for a particular stretch of road. This could be especially useful when a road is still under warranty and repairs may be required without additional cost to the government. The system can produce a structured record within four seconds, including the photograph, exact location, tender number and responsible officer. During one drive to work, the system detected 12 potholes, creating documented evidence that could be used to file complaints with civic authorities. For cities, this shows how AI can move beyond chatbots and automation into practical infrastructure management. Instead of relying entirely on residents to report damaged roads, AI could help identify problems and connect them directly to the parties responsible for fixing them.   • Czech scientists have developed magnetic microrobots that can capture microplastics from contaminated water and soil, with laboratory tests showing removal of up to 94% of polystyrene and 89% of PET from water within one hour. The microrobots combine layered MXene particles with magnetic nickel nanoparticles. MXene attracts and traps plastic particles, while the magnetic nickel allows researchers to control the robots using rotating magnetic fields. In contaminated water, the moving robot swarms removed about 94% of test polystyrene particles and 89% of PET. In model soil, they removed about 81% of polystyrene and 72% of PET. The active movement was important. Researchers found that magnetically controlled robots performed better than the same MXene material relying on passive adsorption because the robots could move through water and tiny water-filled gaps in soil. The technology could offer a new approach to microplastic cleanup, especially because these particles can become trapped in soil and are difficult to collect using conventional methods. However, the results are still limited to laboratory testing. Researchers say real-world trials are needed, while potential issues include metal-ion leaching and incomplete retrieval of the robots. The woman, identified in court filings as Jane Doe 4, said the original photograph was taken when she was about 11. Her lawsuit alleges that her stepfather used Grok to create more than 7,000 fake explicit images of her and traded them online. The case was added to a federal lawsuit originally filed by three Tennessee teenagers, two of whom were still minors. The expanded lawsuit accuses xAI of producing, possessing and distributing AI-enabled child sexual abuse material and seeks class-action status for people whose childhood photos were similarly altered.
