Ferrero just bought Purely Elizabeth. The international food company is adding the Colorado-born better-for-you granola and oatmeal maker for an undisclosed sum as it pursues a more balanced breakfast segment. Hitting its mark, Purely Elizabeth is nearing $300M in annual revenue, launching timely SKUs for protein, fiber, and ingestible beauty. Meanwhile, after splashing $3.1B to acquire WK Kellogg Co, Ferrero has been cleaning up, removing artificial dyes while reinvigorating the Kashi brand. Seeing wellness-aligned brands as high-growth vectors, industry players are eager for a taste. But, hoping to avoid backlash from quality-concerned consumers, Ferrero will back Purely Elizabeth as an independent brand while retaining its founder & CEO Elizabeth Stein in her role. The definition of "moderate drinking" is changing. For decades, US guidelines suggested that up to two drinks per day for men and one for women fell within a "moderate" range. New research challenges that assumption. Modeling lifetime health outcomes, researchers found no meaningful protective effect from low levels of alcohol consumption. Instead, risk began rising at relatively modest intake — with the former US guideline of 14 drinks per week for men associated with roughly a 1-in-25 lifetime risk of an alcohol-attributable death. The findings add to a growing body of evidence linking alcohol to cancer, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and other chronic conditions — reinforcing a broader shift away from the long-held belief that moderate drinking may be healthy. As consumers increasingly prioritize longevity, sleep, recovery, and metabolic health, alcohol is being reevaluated through the same lens as nutrition and exercise.

Healthy snack claims aren’t following through. A University of California, Davis study found 89% of avocado oil-labeled packaged food is cut with cheaper oils. Perceived as healthier than seed oils, consumers pay up to $2/oz. more for avo-fried chips and over $1.50/oz. extra for mayo and salad dressings made with it. But 93% of tested chips and all dressings failed on authenticity, including PepsiCo-owned Siete Foods, Utz-owned Boulder Canyon, and Kraft Heinz-owned Primal Kitchen — whose founder Mark Sisson has refuted the study. In other words, when Big Food acquires BFY brands, trust in quality sinks. The problem may sit deeper in the supply chain. Brands often rely on brokers and multiple suppliers, making it difficult to verify where the issue begins. But for consumers, the damage is already done. Confirming the worst of their fears, it reinforces the belief that when Big Food acquires BFY brands, quality sinks. As more consumers pay a premium for products positioned as healthier alternatives, brands will have to prove consumers are actually getting what they paid for. 📸 : Utz Brands, Inc. Google is prioritizing metabolic health. The tech giant is adding insulin resistance insights to its wearables, combining AI and sensor data to track subtle physiological shifts over time. Google is also integrating glucose data from Abbott’s Lingo continuous glucose monitor into Google Health, giving users a view of glucose trends alongside other health and wellness data. Its AI Health Coach will use those insights to personalize recommendations around nutrition, activity, sleep, and recovery. The move aligns with efforts to make wearables more proactive — using continuous health data and AI to surface biological trends and translate them into personalized guidance.
