Methane is roughly 30x more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas over 100 years, and closer to 80x over a 20-year horizon, which is why regulators are increasingly using the shorter window to judge urgency. In Canada, that urgency now has a deadline. Federal methane regulations require oil and gas operators to run Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs, monthly screening capable of catching leaks as small as 1 kg/h, with annual third-party audits at 10 kg/h. Compliance begins in 2028, targeting a 72% cut in sector methane emissions by 2030. Here is the part that doesn't get talked about enough: None of that is possible without instruments in the field. A leak that isn't detected isn't a data point, it is a gap in the carbon accounting. Every methane-reduction claim, every emissions report, every credit tied to avoided methane rests on the assumption that someone actually found the leak. Detection is the verification layer underneath the whole system.
