“India has the demand. India has the capital. The real differentiator now will be execution.” That was the central message from Vinish Bawa, Partner and Leader – Technology, Media and Telecom, PwC India, and Global Data Centre Practice, as he unpacked India’s strategic moment in the global AI-data centre race. A few ideas stood out: * AI is triggering an infrastructure supercycle. Global data centre capacity is expanding rapidly, driven not only by AI workloads but by digitisation across industries. * India’s opportunity is unusually large. The country generates and consumes a significant share of the world’s data, yet its share of global data centre capacity remains comparatively small. * Capital is not the biggest constraint. Investment interest is accelerating. The harder questions are around land, timely power access, renewable energy, grid readiness, talent and delivery. * The opportunity also goes beyond traditional colocation. GPU-as-a-service, edge infrastructure, managed AI services and new infrastructure models could open fresh layers of value. Bawa’s point was clear: India is at the cusp of a major growth cycle, but ambition alone will not build the backbone of the AI economy. The winners will be those who can turn demand, capital and policy support into infrastructure that is ready on time — and built to scale. “AI may live in the cloud, but the cloud is built on very physical foundations.” That paradox framed Saurabh Kumar, Consulting Editor, The Economic Times Business Verticals’ Editor’s Foreword at the ET National Data Center Summit 2026. India’s data center story is no longer simply about adding racks or building larger facilities. It is becoming the infrastructure story behind the country’s AI ambitions. * India’s data center footprint has expanded dramatically, with capacity already crossing 1.8 GW and a much larger development pipeline taking shape. * AI could account for nearly 70% of future data center demand by 2030, fundamentally changing the scale, density and economics of infrastructure. * The real bottlenecks may not be servers at all. Power, land, fibre, water, cooling, chips, capital and policy will increasingly determine how quickly the ecosystem can grow. * And scale alone will not define leadership. Reliability, sustainability and the ability to make the economics work will matter just as much. As Kumar pointed out, the bigger question is not how many data centers India can build. It is whether India can build them fast enough — and sustainably enough — to become a serious global AI and digital infrastructure powerhouse.
